Re: The Leak ;)

Ptpiz and dvlisarrr,

I feel weird answering questions regarding work that's not my own (I only wish I could take credit for it!) but I will give what answers I can.

He used the century optics 0.7X lens (a rental, I believe) for some shots (mostly wide shots, but also for some close ups) and actually zoomed in part way so that there was very little barrel distortion. I don't know why a zoomed in wide angle looks better than no wide angle and no zoom, but he said he preferred the look and the video speaks for itself. Some shots also required the wide angle lens and these shots were some of my favorites when I saw them on the lcd. They had a very cool look to them. I would buy the 0.7X lens because you can zoom through it.

The entire thing was shot in 4:3 mode and cropped later, btw. No anamorphic lens, no squeeze mode, no letterboxing.

Ptpiz, the anamorphic adapter improves resolution by a decent amount (definitely visible in screen captures, probably hard to tell on standard definition tvs.) I've never used one, only seen screen captures...there should be some at this site, I think. Before I'd buy one, though, I'd buy a tripod (I bought a bogen 501 head after seeing what it could do during this shoot, but the 503 is even better), a shotgun mic, some xlr cables, and a boom stick (not needed for music videos, of course but good to have). A dolly or steadicam never hurts either, but they're not as necessary. Another cool trick that was used in this video was white balancing to slightly off-white objects. Lots of messing with scene file modes, too, if I recall correctly.

Hi Policar,

I normally hire a " vinten pro 5 " tripod which seems to come with the bogan 503 already - I didn't realize the head etc was a seperate accessory  ::) so if I expect to buy something like the pro 5 tripod - does this mean I would have to buy the bogan 503 also - or do places sell them together ?
What tripod do you use then - if the head is a bogan - then what about the tripod it self ?

Also Matt mentions the xl2 etc & the limitations of the dvx - what's your take on that & what are the limitations ?

The century optics 0.7x has got me intrigued also - what other accssories  were used ? steadicam etc  ?

Very nice work - especially towards the end with that nice blue ish lighting - editing always a pleasure to watch  ;)

Re: The Leak ;)

Alright here we go, everyone get ur questions ready before the master returns lol

I as everyone else, want to ask the extremely broad question of How'd u get that! Its really looks amazing and we look forward to any advice you can offer us lowly video nerds :P

But I do have a few speciic questions:

ok, how did u get that shot in the begining with the tickets? or at least how did u get it to look like that? Filters, post work, any specifics would be very help full.

Did u do any stabilization in post? if so with what?

The shots withe the lights behind the girl are pretty amazing, any story on how u achieved that as far as techniques and post work?

hmmm, that all I can think of at the moment, but please, help ur DVX brothers out!

lol Fantastic work man, tell us when the full thing's available

Re: The Leak ;)

Again, don't want to answer questions I don't know the answers to for sure, but I'll give it a try.

The tripod question I can answer. I use bogen sticks and a 501 head, and I bought them as a kit (the "wilderness package" 280 dollars locally and had a nice bag.) The sticks and head can be purchased seperately or sometimes are bundled together.

Cheesesailor, I don't know the specifics of the post work so I can't help there. The sequence in the halls was shot very quickly but basically just involved putting lots of lights behind the talent so the hair glowed. I think I was either asleep or too tired to remember what was going on when that was shut so I'm probably wrong.

I don't know what limitations he means. I know he told me he wanted to shoot in HD in the future if his budget permitted. So it probably has to do with resolution and the high quality widescreen mode.

No stabilizers besides a tripod...later shots use a jib, but none of those are released yet. Even I don't know how they look since I spent most of the time dragging around equiptment and haven't seen the final edit. I'm out of the loop!

Re: The Leak ;)

Where does Matt find these girls??? Does he look them up in some kind of talent search or is he some crazy PIMP who uses all his ex-girlfriends for the videos? lol

Re: The Leak ;)

Good job... How did they get the look in the hallway was that done in post? Nice blue kind of look. What setting did he use

Re: The Leak ;)

Re: The Leak ;)

Policar - does matt use the dvx100a now ? or just the 100 ?
Yeah I'd like to know if the blue effect was done in post - looks very nice indeed ;)
I would guess - the more neutral you shoot - the better scope you have in post, so - I would think the lighting had alot to do with it but hey.. . - policar - let us know buddy :)

Cheers

Re: The Leak ;)

Amazing shots.

This is the kind of sample the gets me excited and depressed at the same time.

Excited, that the DVX is capable of this and depressed that I'll never have that kind of talent.

Anyway, amazing stuff!

lol dont be so hard on urself, yeah, Matt's the man, but I mean he's also been doing this on a pretty high level for like a decade. I don't know how long u've been working on this stuff or what kinda projects you do, but practice and experience go a long way with this stuff. I've only been doing this for about a year on my free time and my stuff looks NOTHING like Matts but I like to think it shows promise and it gets significantly better each time.

Let Matt be an inspiration to us all of how far a decade of hard work, supportive ppl, and some talent can get you ;D

Re: The Leak ;)

Re: The Leak ;)

I wasn't there for the shoot in the hallway, but I think it was mostly post work because I know Matt loves color correcting stuff to make it look better (I could be 100% wrong.) There was some funky white balancing, but most of it produced a lot of noise so wasn't used. The next sequence--which isn't yet online--has a greenish tint and we white balanced to peach colored make up (the one idea I had!) I remember Matt said a couple times that he wished there were a white balance setting between 3200k and 5600k because that gave the coolest look. I think....

He still uses a dvx100. I matched my scene file settings on my 100a for my b-roll which didn't get used (my camera was mostly used for a making of video) and the image was pretty much identical (if anything, my 100a was slightly noisier). It's all in the lighting, though. This footage looked great even on the lcd.
