" The film shouldn't merit any other discussion. Know what I mean? "

No I don't know what you mean and you are illustrating my point. You made a film knowing by your own admission would be offensive to some, yet you don't want to deal with criticism of that.

That's irresponsible, immature and unrealistic. There sin't anything inherently wrong with poking fun at someone (although you might want to pick on someone who can defend themselves) But you have to be prepared for the fallout.

vjbrennan, you're seriously wasting your energy.

Our friend is looking for "shock" effect on an unfortunate video decision, nothing else.

There are sites better suited to his sense of.......hmm........values.

Wasn’t having a go at you vj, just making my own point.
To be fair, sorry Bryan this wasn’t that good anyway.
Predictable and not executed that well.
Jim Carrey was doing this stuff years ago and sorry again Bryan ten times better.
I think they were just messing around, now if it would have been fantastic...then we would have had a problem.

Pookie - I think personal attacks are highly uncalled for. How can you speak on my values?

That's ridiculous. But I guess it's your prerogative if you wish to be narrowminded and assume that my whole body of work is representative of what you see in "Freddy." I can certainly do without your future comments.

At least you have a voice to stand up for yourself, and can make an intellectual judgement as to other people's communications.

Most "retards" wouldn't be as fortunate as you.

The irony in your rebuttal is magnificent.

Cheers,
Chris

jp, no offense taken. In fact, considering how volatile a subject this could be, I think this has been rather civil all around for the most part.

Knock Out Films - I hardly think that "Freddy," the main character in my short, is in anyway representative of an actual mentally-handicapped individual. The portrayal is so terribly farcical and over-the-top, that I can't understand why you're arguing over this. It just seems so ineffectual.

You know the REAL problem, subject matter aside.
It did'nt say anything. It had no point. Thus you will only get a cold reception.
If your character had turned out smarter and the story was not as linear/ predictable.
You could have turned the whole subject on it's head.
It's the first mistake any filmmaker/ director comes across. Art needs meaning. You either accept the fact and move on...or...You end up making a stream of meaningless work.

Good call JP.

I see where pookie and Jim are coming from. I see where Bryan and others are coming from...

But I just didn't think it was funny.

I think we should all give Bryan the space he deserves to move on with what has been presented here, quit pookin him with a stick and the whacking at his head when he barks. Let the poor guy move on and get what he gets from this worn out critique. I think he's got some talent and will undoubtedly learn from this experience. Good luck with your first DVX film man!

Actually I know mentally handicapped people who act just like that. DO you know many handicapped people? I know many.

Nobody is arguing over the right you have to make this film. You just seem unwilling to accept criticism of it. You don't deny that is knowingly offensive, yet you can't understand why people might be offended.

It's okay to invite controversy, you should however, be prepared to deal with it.

There's always going to be people that you'll offend - no matter what film you make. That said, it's hard to take anyone seriously in this forum after reading through everything until now. If you take this film for more than the grain of salt it was shot with, there's more at stake with own personal problems with the world. If you're offended, shut your mouth and go use your DVX-100 to make a film that shows your side of the argument. Do not, for any reason, complain what someone else decided to make a film about. It's DONE and edited - there's no stopping it now. Whether or not you agree with it, if people don't like it they're smart enough to make up their own minds about it and move on with life.
