framing thingee

I don't know if this is even possible. But here goes: many times when I shoot docs, I constantly looking into viewfinder or LCD. I pay close attention to what is on the LCD. But you miss something that is happening off camera. In a viewfinder, you can keep your other eye open. But it is not the same thing.

I wondered if it would be possible, to view a bigger canvas. The LCD shows a bigger frame, inside of it is a smaller frame of what is actually being recorded. If i see something being recorded, I grab that square and position it there. Double click and it records that part of the frame now. I guess this is not possible in 4K but what about in a lesser resolution.

The best way to do that, would be using a 4k image and then allow a pan and scan type thing so you can select the part of the 4k image you want, giving a lower res. maybe 2k or 1080. So you frame wider and then just use the portion you want (zoomed in). So you can watch the LCD for things happening out of frame.

Not a bad idea, but completely pointless. First, it's not useful to narrative filmmaking, like you say, but in addition, do you really think that any documentary filmmakers are going to be using RED?? No, what a waste of money that would be. they'll use the DVX, the HVX, or another HD cam for less than 1/3 the cost.

However, at resolutions lower than 4K, that kind of feature may just be a simple thing to program. If that's the case, then go for it, but if it increases the cost of the cam more than $20, then it's not worth it, especially when you can easily do that kind of cropping in post.

It's entirely possible that IMAX and other theatrical documentaries could be shot using RED at 4K resolution. It's always inadvisable to make blanket statements about how a specific technology may or may not be used.
