Frame rates and non drop vs drop

I have a couple questions here that I hope to keep simple and to the point as they are confusing topics for me.

I have the XH A1 with the Firestore FS-C hard drive. I have been shooting video for about 2 years and have keep most things simple. However I am starting to get more involved in the technogical aspects of this camera to get better video results.

#1. What frame rates are good for what type of action? ie. what frame rate shoudl I use for action footage, sports, fast moving, etc. If I choose 60i (which I have been told to use for this type of work) I get a lot of interlace artifacts, which is new to me. Heck of a surprise seeing your footage lok bad. Why do folks choose the 30f rate and the 24f rate. I know the 24f rate is to give a film look, any other reason?

#2. When importing the footage into FCP, what mode should I use for footage shot in 30f mode? I know for 24f you choose 1080/24p, for 60i, you choose 1080/60i, so what about 30f? And do you have to quit and re-launch FCP and then re-import footage to get the settings to apply?

#3. Simply, can anyone tell me simply what drop frame vs. non drop frame is? I have read a few things about this but it really does not seem to make any sense.

I appreciate help on what are probably very newbie questions, but you have to start somewhere.

Cheers!

#1 Depends on the look. The only reason I would shoot 60i is for slow motion. If it is some kind of live event (concert, documentary) I would personally use 30f (unless a multi-cam shoot hinders me to 60i). For anything episodic/cinematic, I would use 24f. I just shy away from 60i because of the handicam look (this is all preference)

#2 Import 30f has 1080i60. You shouldn't have to quit FCP to apply the settings...just change capture settings to 1080i60 and open Log/Capture.
