Frame Rate Hack for HPX-170 Sample

Looks like the Barry's frame rate hack works just like he said it would... I'm going to test some night scenes out with them later this evening.

Here's a sample of scene file for 2,3,4,6,8 and 10FPS...

Cheers,

//Leo

Heh - glad to hear it still works in the production unit, especially since I put a section on it in the new book. :) I also put frame rate scene files on the CD in the book. It was a risk on my part because they could have decided to disable it, but I'm really glad they didn't; I love that 2fps look.

For those wanting to do this, be aware that a few of the numbers are different for the 170, vs. the 200/200A. The new book has a table of all the frame rate numbers for both models.

Barry,

Ha ha, very coincidental... I just opened your CD two seconds ago and came back to the board to post that it would have saved me a lot of time had I been smart enough to look there first...

Thanks for the file(s)...

On a side note, if you've got your book that came with the HPX170, does your HVX series books cover any material in more depth?

Thanks again,

Leo

The new HVX+HPX Book is longer, larger, and more detailed than the original HVX Book was. It has (almost) everything that the HVX Book had, plus about 20 pages of additional stuff. The actual change is, if I remember correctly, about 30 pages of new stuff, and about 10 pages of old/outdated information reworded and removed for simplicity. (plus we fixed an age-old page numbering error, so the page count doesn't seem that much longer but trust me, it is; I can only fit 15 in a box now because it's bigger!)

That's why I named it the way it is: it's the HVX Book plus the HPX170, so it's called (clumsily enough) "The HVX+HPX Book". :D

Cool, thanks. Awesome book BTW, it should definitely be included with every HVX/HPX as standard kit... I will be referring to it frequently.

I can't believe i'm about to say this but er uh to be technical it's called ""The HVX and HPX Book".
:) just messing wit ya.... lol

I'm about to pop that cd in now, thanks for the heads up guys!

I don't think I ever saw what 2fps footy looks like... bout to do a google search after check out the cd.

sorry, I am having a little trouble with this with my 170.

I have copied the scene files from the CD that came with the book. I have loaded it into the camera. Selected the 40 FPS & then the 50 FPS and done some test shooting. It states that it is in "40 FPS" mode & then "50 FPS" on the LCD & in the other settings but when I load the footage into FCP it is all 59.94...

I'm curious what I doing wrong?

Thanks.

Received my 170 today, and the first thing I did was convert my HVX200 scene file settings (frame rate hack and all) to the 170-compatible settings. With the help of Barry's new book, everything works like a charm.

And I love this camera already!

i must be doing something wrong, i got my 170 today and tried copying the txt file from my hvx200 onto the sd card for my 170 and it didnt transfer over correctly (frame rate hack or scene file settings). the card has been formatted already. am i missing a step?

HPX170 scene files aren't directly compatible with HVX200 scene files. You'd have to manually save an HPX170 scene file to the card and then edit that.

so by now is it considered "safe" to do this hack? I remember either in your video or book you warn people that this is not 100% safe and owners are at risk of messing up the camera. Now that a few years have past and more and more pple have used this hack, is it safe to say- Its safe? :)

I don't think I've ever heard of anyone having complications due to having used it. With that said, there's always the potential that someone will be first, so -- proceed at your own risk, but lots of us are perfectly content to use it.

ah...i was just copy and pasting my hvx scene files to the 170 scene files. i eventually did it this way late last night but fell asleep before i could test it.

Need a bit of HELP on the 2FPS Hack ... I have formatted a SD card in the HPX-170 and succesfully saved a scene file onto the SD card. When I remove it from the HPX-170 and put into my Pc's card reader the card is not reconized, I receive a "Card Access Error" in the reader, hence I cannot explore the directories to load the .txt file in notepad, to edit. Does anyone have a quick tip if I am doing something wrong or how I can get my pc to read the SD card?

I am excited to try Barry's 2 FPS Hack.

SD Card = 4 GB Kingston

Thanks for your quick response Barry,
That will be my first troubleshoot step. I will try the SD card on different a computer(s) / Card Reader.

Looking forward to some timelapse footage!
