Frame Ramping?

Don't know if it was covered but will RED be able to frame ramp while recording? I have many shots where I need this done; one on a steadicam. I need to jump from 24FPS at 4k to 60FPS 4k (I know, great thing having to be tied down to RAID while on a steadicam but I'm gonna go for it.) while recording. At other times I need to go the opposite way and jump from 24FPS to 2 or 3 FPS (which will be on a SpyderCam; you can record 2 or 3 FPS no problem on an internal device, right?)

Frame ramping

Frame ramping

Yes, RED can frame ramp - either in a smoth S-linear speed up / slow down fashion or via an instantaneous rate change every frame (where we follow an externally generated command set)

When you S-linear you mean start at 24 jump to 50 then fall back to 24??? If that's that case are you able to set the amount of frames it inbetween the time it should reach the top point and the bottom point.

So you choose say 24 and 48.....

Okay so you start at 24 set a ramp to 48 at a period of 12 frames so then 12 frames after that mark (from 24) it hits 48. Then you tell it to drop back to 24 in 240 frames (which would be 5 seconds, because you're now shooting 48 frames a second.). And by doing that you could do an incremental ramp where you set it to fall back from 48 to 36 at 120 frames (2.5 seconds in this case) and then again from 36 to 24 at the next 120 frames. With some major programming you could set the rate of increment for each individual frame.

That's awesome news. I can't believe it hasn't been brought up before now (perhaps we just didn't want to be asking for too much?) :) but this is really killer. I can't wait to see how the GUI turns out.

someone mentioned it before but it was pretty early in the game when the provability wasn't there...

but remember ramping with a manual iris means you need to manually rack your iris with the ramp, or ramp your shutter speed in camera.

Hm, that's a good point. I'm used to ramping with the Varicam, but the iris can be controlled electronically with that camera.

Ramping with the shutter isn't necessarily a bad thing, depending on what the range needs to be. Motion blur is the obvious tradeoff, and you can run into some bizzare DOF changes if you're ramping with the iris. But at least the shutter should be able to be electronically controlled to compensate with the ramp, right?

Either way, you're right... but I'm glad that the option exists.

yes.. another way to do it while leaving the shutter alone (which is usually a good thing considering slow mo stuff is usually something moving fast) is by ramping gain.. but the tradeoff is noise of course.

either way its not a big deal, its what we are used to on film.. but people just gotta be aware that its not as easy as it is on the Varicam

I would LOVE to be able to smoothly ramp the shutter speed!

Another use for this would be also be controlling a time-lapse sunrise/sunset situation where you are starting out with a fixed f-stop and a long exposure in the dark, and work your way up to a fairly fast exposure time as the sun rises... probably too complex and tricky to program on the camera (maybe not?), but certainly a thing to consider if there's a console software app for the camera run on a laptop...
