Four AG-HPX250 videos released from Texas Media Systems

Panasonic should discontinue the AF100 the way it is now and put all the specs that the HPX250 has but without a lens. Or the option of an HPX250 without a lens.

I feel like I would love to upgrade my HVX200 to this camera, but I want a camera with these types of specs with the color space it offers, P2 and have the ability to use my glass on it as well.

I feel like if they somehow managed to fuse the AF100 for its ability to take lenses and still be a video camera and combine it with the color space, P2 option, and different codec options of the HPX250, that Panasonic would really have a hell of a camera on their product list. Even if it costs like 5 to 7 grand...it's worth it..

Maybe next model...?

I agree. And hopefully it would have a Super 35mm sensor like the FS100 and F3. I'm guessing that adding P2, 35mm sensor and AVC-I recording would make that camera (AG-HPX35?) cost about $9,000 street. When you consider the self-contained nature of AVC-I on P2, as opposed to a Sony FS100 attached to a Atomos Ninja, it would be well worth an $9,000 price (consider, however, the latter can be had for a total of $6,000).

Anyone who purchased their AF100 at launch knows the pain of losing $800 or more on their investment in just 9 months (an $800 lens is now bundled from most dealers). Like rebates offered on end-of-life products, I wonder if this indicates lower-than-expected sales for the AF100. If so can we expect to see a new version (AG-HPX35?) announced at NAB? Barry, what do you know that you're not telling us? ;)

It is just the nature of the beast. A new product comes out and everyone WANTS and they spend the premium. A few months down the line other manufacturers come out with their new products and then the price drops and/or you get freebies added to the package. If we received everything we wanted in one package, we would want no more. That wouldn't be good for their business. Roll out a little at a time and we keep us pursuing or spending as they say. I just purchased a AC160 and I am wondering what newer product is coming out, did I make the right decision, is it right for my needs, etc,. I haven't even received it yet, thats the bad part. But , can't wait to get it..

Well, I can say that there's just about no way you're going to see a replacement any time soon. It's only 9 months old. I can tell you that they day they announced it I started badgering them for the AVC-I P2 version, as have many of us here. So they certainly know we want it.

As for lower sales -- I'm sure the appearance of the FS100 has impacted the sales some, I mean, it would be silly to think otherwise. For six months there was no alternative, now there is -- although it's one that is such a vastly different type of product that I really don't see how someone could be torn between the two, but hey, they're both at $5k, so I'm sure that the red-hot pace they initially came out at has slowed some now that there's an alternative. But that doesn't mean there'll be some "HPX35" coming around the corner. It takes time to develop these products. The new products are the HPX250 and AC130 and AC160. Once the team launches those, I'm sure they'll have time to evaluate the marketplace and see if there's room or demand for something like a Panasonic version of the F3. If there is, and they think they can sell enough to make the R&D worthwhile, then you might see something like that. But right now, if I was them, I'd be toying with basic technologies but I wouldn't be committed to any particular form factor or sensor size or anything until Red and Canon get their announcements over with on Nov. 3rd. That's only a month away, and once that's out of the way they'll have a lot better idea of where the competition is at and is headed.

I totally agree with Barry. And from what Ive seen of his comparison of the AF100 vs. the FS100 I cannot see how a slightly larger sensor than the 4/3 is really gonna make much difference. P2/AVCintra codec? Sure. But even if Panny came out with something like an AF200, I would think the AF100 would still have buyers for a couple more years.

As far as canon, if i were them I would come out with some type of hybrid camera: Like a 7D or 5D mark II with pro audio capabilities (xlr adjustable inputs, phantom power, etc) video viewfinder, and other video camera features that still takes awesome still pictures in a handheld form....and I bet they do.

the 250 sure looks tempting....I am still making money with my hvx 201 though. One question: will the new avcintra eat up more P2 space in time? From what I saw on the pdf it looked as if it eats up twice as much as dvcprohd 1080??? is that right?

The main profile of AVC Intra is 100Mbps, which is the same data rate as DVC Pro HD at 1080. So it will not take up any more space vs. the HVX 200.

There is an AVC Intra 50, which is 50Mbps, but it only records 4:2:0 color. Panasonic recently announced AVC Ultra, with both lower and higher data rates, but this is not on the HPX250.

I should have put in my request for you to tape an airplane with propeller in motion to see how the camera renders really fast objects. Hopefully it does a better job than my ipod:
