Fortcoming Olympus OM-D - v ideo better than GH2

Well, this is from a well known 4/3 rumour website, but of course it's a rumour so usual caution advised. There are claims from several of their sources that the video on the forthcoming Olympus OM-D is 'better than the GH2' and 'beats it hands down'. Bold talk. Apparently, one of the aspects Olympus worked hard on reducing was jello effect. Worth a heads up though because the camera is due to be announced within a few weeks. Weathersealing, tilting LCD and 5 axis in-camera stabilisation sound interesting to me, if indeed those features turn out to be correct.

It's always helpful to link to the article that you're referring to.

The article only references a reduction in the "jello" and then claims of higher dynamic range. No mention of codec. If the new Olympus indeed has a better sensor for video, but outputs it as 17mbps H.264 and is unhackable, then it's worthless.

No one will know for sure until it is released.

Thanks for posting the link Gary. I started writing my post by including it but then removed it because I wasn't sure what the DVXuser policy was about links to rumor websites. You're right -no codecs, framerates or bitrates mentioned in the article as they don't have this level of detail yet, but they do mention the video quality claims - unsubstantiated as the camera isn't even available to test yet. I would be surprised and disappointed if the bit rate was any less than 24mbps. I would hope 28mbps but as you say, we don't know anything until it's released.

I am keeping a close eye on these new Olympus OM-D cameras. It would be great if they are as good as the GH-2 for video work, and if not then the new Olympus lenses ( 5 new lenses are supposed to be in the works including more primes ) might be worth looking in to.

When I was a kid, I lusted after Olympus OMs (and Nikon Fs and Canon AEs :-)) -- and the rumored weathersealing, video improvements and in-camera stabilization are really attractive. But if it has a tilting LCD (as opposed to Panasonic's flip-out LCD), I won't be buying one.

I sure hope the GH3 is weathersealed.

Olympus owns some high speed photography technology so they have an opportunity - but I'll bet they don't take advantage of it.

Let's wait for some well done samples.

It has no 24p nor 60p, so it is useless for me. But I'm curious about how that IBIS does work in video mode...

One other thought... Olympus is calling this an OM-D model E-5M camera, meaning that more OM-D cameras will eventually come down the pike.

From what I can gather, they've dropped AVCHD for vanilla mp4, but with a similar bit rate. I don't know how this will impact image quality?
I quite liked the idea of the Olympus detachable EVF, for motion shooting. Fixed DSLR type viewfinders are fine and good, but a small detachable EVF that can be fitted to the camera as needed, is just asking for a video optimised body to attach itself to.
Maybe one day

The IBIS is incredible on this camera. I hope Panasonic figures this out and abandons its OIS system for IBIS. Too bad the Oly only outputs 1080i, limits video clips to 30 minutes and has no standard external mic jack. I really wonder whether Oly has some sort of video non-compete agreement with Panasonic?

From what I understand, IBIS is not used during video recording. Instead software stabilization uses the gyros and sensors, along with lens data to correct involuntary movement. This explains why on some wider lenses there is stretching and warping of the corners as seen in other software based stabilization.

Any new lenses announced yet?

Man...all these new videos on vimeo and YT just made me put all my Nex gear up for sale to replace it with this! 5 days ago, I didn't even care of this new OMD and was very content and happy with my 5N (I'm an ex 60D and 5D2 user too). But this IBIS really is freakin miraculous and revolutionary imo...especially for video shooters. (however, I did read that it may not work on video mode with non-native lenses, like old vintage mf lenses (but these threads are old and not brought up anymore; so I think the following solved this issue)...but after more research, I read you just need to go into the menu and manually input the correct focal length setting for non-native mf lens (also stated in the pdf manual)...I still am not 100% sure on this..sounds like a firmware fix or bug; or just n00b users who never read the manual ..but I think all you need to do is just input it in the settings..afterall, non-natve lenses can't communicate with the body so it will never know what fov lens you're using if using an MF non-native lens...anyone own the OMD yet and also have old MF you can test the IBIS on and confirm?????)

Anyways... why I am selling my entire Sony Nex 5N set-up pronto and replacing it with the new Olympus om-d e-m5 is first and foremost the IBIS!

Yes, it's only m43 and it's kind of a downgrade from my awesomely sharp and low-light capable 5N... and the OMD is only 30p too.. BUT stable video is much much more important to me and the viewers than 24p or bigger sensor. Afterall, what people see first and foremost is Shake, amateur jiggle, etc. Laymen and non-video heads don't even know wtf 24p is! But, laymen and everyday people, will instantly notice jiggle and shaky footage. As for 24p...I can always convert the 30p to 24p in fcp compressor, albeit not perfect I admit and will have that missing frame jitter every other frame from the conversion; but again, this is hardly noticeable, especially to laymen.. and IBIS is much more welcome.

Additionally, how much do people spend and are willing to put up with Merlin and arm and chest stabilizers, dollys, cranes etc?? Exactly...people are willing to pay top dollar and will even put up with massive amounts of stabilization gear, JUST for stable video... Which makes the little OMD's IBIS truly magical and very much worth it over my Nex 5N (and maybe even all other DSLR's), even if it does only have dinky m43 and 30p. (but imagine the IQ if it was hacked :)

Since I am for sure getting one and already selling my Nex 5N setup..and also really concerned on the IQ from the big switch from apsc/crop to m43... I've done more research on the still IQ and to sum it up, it far far exceeds all and any other m43 camera. They even compare it to and say it's similar in IQ to the Nex 5N and 7 (which says a lot, as the Nex apsc sensor and IQ is proven better than any current Canon apsc camera). So it seems it stacks up to apsc cameras. 1600, 3200, 6400 and up also is surprisingly cleaner than past m43; seems like a good 1 to maybe even 2 stops better than older m43 cams's iso. As for dynamic range, I read and seen comparison pics that it is a good 1-2 stops better than previous m43 cameras and can take complex DR pictures like no other m43 camera and maintain detail in highlight and shadows (which are the biggest con of m43 - dynamic range). Only thing of course it will never to catch up on is the dof and bokeh, obviously.

If anyone has experience and have owned, used, compared and can give opinions on Nex 5N/7 vs new OMD.. in regards to IQ, DR, Iso, etc., or anything else please chime in! :)

i'd wait for the GH3, since it will probably be announced in the next month or so.. until then, you've still got the sony!! good luck!

Well the GH3 is out and pretty nice, but I personally am looking for an EM-5 with better video options. Did i read Olympus is planning something like this or am i just dreaming.
