Just for the sake of balance, and perhaps also to prevent me from ripping all my own hair out reading this thread, I have to say, by comfortable margin FORREST GUMP holds the distinction as the worst movie I've ever seen. It's saccharin pablum around a nougatty core of deeply offensive propaganda.
Hank's performance is embarrassing, but he can't automatically be personally faulted, at least beyond the decision to take the role in the first place. Using mental retardation as a metaphor for ANYTHING is galling, of course, but it's not inherently fatal to a work of art - OF MICE AND MEN works as a story; you might throw LA STRADA in there too - but the way GUMP actually exploits it as a virtuous ideal is sickening.
And when a movie is thematically vile, technical proficiency shouldn't necessarily mitigate our opinion of it. The classic example is BIRTH OF A NATION.
