Forrest Gump...

What are your thoughts on this film? I've seen it several times, and it really never makes me feel any emotions at all... I want to laugh at Tom Hanks... rather than feel for him... thoughts?

It is one of the great anomolies of box office history. I knew, however, it was going to be big when the 8 year old kids I used to teach tennis to would quote the trailer incessantly -- "Like is like a box of chocolates." I mean c'mon, there weren't too many accents more fun to quote than Forest Gump's.

Although I understand why people HATE this movie (my best friend despises it more than anything), I personally like it. A lot. It was unlike any movie I'd ever seen and I thought the love story and epic feel were very well done. It's just one of those unique experieces that people either jump onto right away or jump off. And it seems to divide people pretty equally. And there's something I always liked about you not knowing whether the story he was telling was real or completely made-up.

I never had any particular feeling towards it either, Brandon. I wonder if the book was very good. Good enough to be filmed I suppose.

You can't be serious !

Gump is such a great film and I never get why some people don't like it.

There's a reason the film garnered 13 Academy Award nominations while winning Best Picture and Director; and it ain't because you think it sucks.

The real anomoly is the small niche who doesn't get this film.

Now, I didn't say it wasn't a good film John :)

I just said it didn't "move" me... there's a difference... it didn't click with me is all... I appreciate the film for what it is and indeed believe it is a fine piece of filmmaking.

WTF?

Did you see his other laughable performances...
Philadelphia (laughed my balls off)
Saving Private Ryan ("...Earn This" then he dies...actually dies! Classic comedy there!)
But Forrest Gump...that takes the cake. His best friend, the love of his life, and his ever supportive mother all perish (probably laughed themselves to death, the lot of them.)

Edit:
Gump sits prouldly upon his bench at #9 on the ol' Callaghan Top 100 Films Of All Time List by the way...

When his mom dies and he breaks down; jesus ....

When Bubba dies; WTF ....

(Balls falling off - That is just too funny)

No offense dude... but I don't really take your movie "critique" all that seriously, after seeing some of your faves... I think we've got very different taste...

I do love Saving Private Ryan... one of my all time favorites!

My young brethren filmmaker

Not only is that out of line; but way of base. The Cal Masta has some of the best spins on Film Critique on the board. He is a true Cinema Connaisseur.

I almost don't even know how too reply to this :(

It is without basis or merit.

LOL... question John... define a "Cinema Connaisseur" Everyone is! My little brother is, in his own right... everyone has things they like, or dislike... I do not think I should "respect" anyone's opinion on a film to the point of persuading myself to like the film... if it doesn't work for me, and I do not like it, then that's how it's going to be... I'll give films a second chance (in viewing) but to be persuaded by another's opinion I will not...

I do agree Cal is well versed in films, and film history, and for that I respect him...

But, I do think he and I differ greatly in taste in film... therefore I don't immediatley assume if he says a film is great that I'll like it...

I cannot remember if I have ever seen your TOP 10 Best Film list ever ? (Jeez, we've done so many of them). Let us see it please ? I only want to contrast yours and Cal's tastes.

-

I don't think anyone here will ever try and convince or dissuade other people's taste on a film; but the discussion that ensues is what motivates

Recurring for me is:

How can one not like Titanic ?
How can one not like Tarantino ?
What do you mean De Palma is not a god ?

It is important to analyze, otherwise serious film discussion would never exist.

-

On this subject; you stated that you did not feel moved ... many people would be surprised with this; Bubba dying, the mother dying ....

Saying you wanted to laugh at his character (I assume you meant during non-comical scenes) raises an eyebrow.

-

I probably reading way into things; as usual. Isn't your favorite filmmaker Robert Rodriguez ? I mean, no offense again, but come on. RR's work has as much substance and weight as a Peanut Butter Wafer.

Not everyone is a film Connoisseur. Having an Opinion on something does not make one's opinion worth anything. But some have opinions differing from our own that you have to acknowledge.

I think when it comes to opinion, we're all snobs at the end of the day; because whose opinion matters but our own, right ?

-

But Cal only made light of Hank's performances and the idea of them being emotionally dry. He never intended to change your mind I think.

-

Now I'm just rambling, but to further stress, sometimes one may try and open a person mind (Not really trying to change it per se) to let them see something they may be missing.

Apart from scenes mentioned by John, one scene that sticks in my head : when he has Jennys house torn down. That really got to me.

There's not a SINGLE film that Callaghan has recommended that I have NOT loved. He knows what he's talking about when it comes to film (and other things). I honestly can not name a single film he's recommended that isn't great.

Callaghan's top 100 list is great! Most of the films he loves are very old and probably don't appeal to most of the young so I can see why Brandon may have a problem with his list. You have to have a particular mindset (and some patience maybe) to enjoy some of those really old films. But man if you love old films Callaghan's list is the cream of the crop! I don't really agree on the order he has, though. And something funny though about Star Wars being the number two best film of all time!? But a very good list. One of the best I've seen.

I'm one of those who loves Forest Gump. It seems impossible not to.

I'm a Gump man myself. Was one of those films I saw twice in theatres. Great whimsical underdog storytelling.

I laughed, I cried, my balls fell off...
