Forrest Gump...

I think Tom Hanks is always amazing and I can see why AFI has Gump on their top 100, but I still don't like the movie.

For me, it occupies a weird space between farce and melodrama. Like Brandon said, there's no accounting for taste.

I fully respect it as a classic, but I don't enjoy watching it.

There's a huge difference between the two, I think.

Oh, and John:
Titanic is a silly chick flick, Tarantino is a one-note director and DePalma, well, I'd agree with you about granting him god-like status except for the fact that his recent work includes Mission to Mars, Snake Eyes and Femme Fatale...

Welcome back, by the way :)

I love the movie. I laughed, I cried.

Comedy/Drama is one of those genres that's so rarely done well and it's my favorite.

Callaghan's top 100 list is great! Most of the films he loves are very old and probably don't appeal to most of the young so I can see why Brandon may have a problem with his list. You have to have a particular mindset (and some patience maybe) to enjoy some of those really old films. But man if you love old films Callaghan's list is the cream of the crop! I don't really agree on the order he has, though. And something funny though about Star Wars being the number two best film of all time!? But a very good list. One of the best I've seen.

Actually, I do enjoy older films a lot... Actually, more times than not I like older films BETTER than newer ones... Love the Thin Man movies... who likes those?

First of all

Cal is like the resident authority on the classic film series. My film tutelage is more or less the 70's and on

I think you may want to take another look at Cal's list; you may be surprised too see what you like and do not; based on your last

(Give us your TOP 10 bizzle !)

Mhmmm. thanks man! Yep... you were right John... I offer an apology Cal... You have a GREAT list... would I have EVERY movie you have on your list on mine? Probably not... but it's an amazing list nonetheless.

And the clouds parted and all was well within the DVXUSER realm (Sounds of Angel's)

Cal has even a more eclectic taste than I could fathom. A little too 'Golden Age' for me. I'm fixated on the films in my lifetime I confess; selfishly.

Damn it

Please give us your TOP 10 !

Biiiaaatttchh !

Hudson... I'll TRY to get a top ten up, FOR YOU man... It's gunna be tough though and I want to truly think it through before posting :)

I never understood why people bag on Forest Gump... I know there are a ton of porn references you can make (Forest Hump, I was cumming) but at the same time, this is one of the definitive films depicting the last half of the 20th century of major American events. The simple philosophy of this film is conveyed at the very end where Forest says he doesn't know if Lt. Dan was right and we all have a destiny or if Momma was right and we're all just like feathers floating on a wind, but maybe they both were. That is a paradigm and one of the most beautiful ways of conveying one to others.

This film, beyond the meaning is also technically brilliant. In my opinion the Lt Dan no legs thing is the BEST SPECIAL EFFECT EVER!

You can take your aliens blowing up the white house, your hollow man, even your T rex chasing a jeep... The Lt. Dan no leg special effect actually helps the story and is seemless.

This is just one of those films that works on so many levels that the viewer is offered a pure look at history, an innocent view of a life long love, a childs perspective at the sacrifice of parents, and most importantly, the cycle of life that we all find ourselves in.

If you feel nothing from this film then honestly, I pity you. I consider it to have one of the highest quality level of any film ever made.

Die Hard sucks compared to Death Wish... Your super cops are nothing compared to my vigilante architects! Seriously though, Death Wish is a master piece of film making that no one gives credit to.

Forest Gump rules... Then again, in the book he and Jenny hump a lot more... There was even a sequel.

Bricey's Top Ten Film List

Bricey's Top Ten Film List

1. The Passion of the Christ
poster_250.jpg

This film is the film that moved me, and immersed me the most of any movie I have ever seen. Maybe it has something to do with my own faith. Probably... But this is the movie that I have felt the most connected and engulfed in... It has been thus far, the most compelling and amazing film experience yet.

2. El Mariachi
el-mariachi.jpeg

This film is what has inspired me to do what I do... make movies. It's not amazing in scale, and it has a lot of issues technically with it, but for it's sheer inspiration to my life, I rank it number 2.

3. Star Wars (A New Hope)
star-wars-new-hope.jpg

I saw Star Wars for the first time at the age of 13. It was the most amazing movie experience I had had to that point in my young life. I will love the film, and though now more mature I see areas it could be better, I still love the world created and the characters.

4. Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
B00005RDP8.02.LZZZZZZZ.jpg

An Epic, an immersive epic. Fellowship of the Ring grabbed me from the opening prologue to the closing credits. I loved everything about this film. Beautiful scenery, wonderful characters, and the classic good vs. evil story.

5. The Bourne Identity
BOURNE%20IDENTITY.jpg

The one Spy/Action film that has left a lasting impact on my filmmaking style and perception. Bourne changed the modern action/spy and I love the indie vibe to the entire thing. Plus, Damon kicks butt!

6. Raiders of the Lost Ark

Raiders-of-The-Lost-Ark-Poster-C10288336.jpeg

This is the quintissential classic adventure film! From the moment Indie is sneaking through the booby traps I loved this film... the pacing was terrific, the story was simple, yet effective.

7. A Few Good Men
few-good-men.jpg

This is the film that stands out to me in the acting category... It was an incredible achievement in simple dialogue scenes being powerful and moving simply with incredible performances by the entire cast.

8. Saving Private Ryan
saving%20private%20ryan%20poster.jpg

The war epic on my list is Saving Private Ryan. I couldn't believe I was watching the D-Day invasion unfold before my eyes... A powerful and moving film.

9. Spinal Tap

The comedy on the list goes to an underrated film. Spinal Tap had me in stitches from the moment I began watching. I love the improv and characters of the film. If you haven't seen the DVD, get it, it has a ton of stuff in there that was cut...

10. The Sixth Sense
200px-The_sixth_sense.jpg

The only thriller/horror on the list... When I saw it, I totally didn't expect the twist... maybe it is overrated because of the great twist... but I still love this film.

Wow

That might be the definative take on the subject

Wow Brice

I ahave to admit; that is one respectful list

My only reservation would be with

5. The Bourne Identity

This style of filmmaking is what is wrong with modern cinema; the Mis-En-Scene is non existent; it is MTV Quick frantic shaky cut after quick frantic shaky cut...

But nice list anyways ! The Passion is expected from you (Your faith) and the rest of the list is far from what I'd ever recognize as the BEST EVER but ..

Hey

Opinions are like *** ****

I can't say I don;t love Star Wars, but that was axed from my best ever as I got older; A Few Good Men is just the coolest Court Room Drama, LOTR can never be dissed ...

Not what I would expect, but not entirely debatable

My problem with the list is that I have a hard time believing the top 10 films of all time are all filmed within your lifetime...

Best courtroom is A Few Good Men? I gotta disagree with that... 12 Angry Men, baby... 12 Angry Men

Thanks John. Yeah, see I like Bourne for the very reason you don't :) I like that style (personally). And thanks... like I just told a buddy on the IM. Everyone's top ten will be different, even if their top 20 or 30 are the same.

i think its interesting brandon that your list is composed of contemporary Films.

I wonder if thats a cultural thing? like, youger people just cant dial into the old films for whatever reason. I too am afflicted by this, i am guilty of never having seen Citizen Kane. Its weird, when i do watch older pre contemporary movies i find that they are somehow more satisfying.( star wars being the begining of a new era along with Jaws)

Forexample, one of the single best films ive EVER seen, was "Day Of Wrath" by Carl Dreyer. Net Flix it. Its GREAT, and very simple, simple lighting, simple special effects, simple camera work. But as a whole its more. the story is powerful, and when i finihsed it, i had been through an emotional roller coaster, just from dialogue.

I however did find that FG was similar in this respect. it ran a gambit of violence, comedy, grief, and love....

I think some of the best movies are reflective of life, a mixture of Genres. not just one polished facet.
