I am working in documentaries and will be switching to HD production on my next films. Shooting is done in DVCPRO HD and DVCPRO 50. The FCP timeline we will be editing in is DVCPRO HD. My setting for HD capturing is 1080 30p. The reason in my head is that I am using a lot of old archival footage that is mostly on DV, Beta, VHS etc. - so in other words SD 60i - and it seems to me it's easier to get that into a 30p timeline over a 24p timeline. But what about the quality of the 60i footage over the HD 30p? Can I do an upconvert with FCP or do I need to do it at a post house?
I would like to hear from people with experience if my reasoning is flawed somewhere down the line or if this is a good workflow.:dankk2:

I would like to know more or less the same thing, the best way to upconvert dv to hd, so im upping this thread...

I have done some experiments with just dragging down dv 16:9 material on a DVCPRO HD timeline in FCP and doing a resize to fill up the screen.. and I think it looks ok.. there are even some artifacts disappearing.. is this the way to do it?

You are going to lose quite alot of quality just scaling with FCP. The anti-aliasing it performs automatically will leave you with footage quite a bit softer than the original DV source.

I'm not too sure about other programs like AE or something that may do a better job, but if you're very concerned about the final quality of your project I would take it to a post house and get a proper hardware conversion done on it. Depending on the amount footage, it probably wouldn't take too long (time=money) and your final result would be alot nicer.

I actually bought that program and it didnt do anything for me. I think that its only useful if the dv material is progressive and 4:3. The material that we will use in our project is shot with an pd150 in 16:9 ... we have allot of dv material and Im not completely shore wich parts will be used.. Is it a good idé to edit the movie by just resizing in FCP and then do the up convert when everything else is done..?? or will that be a problem when we are mixing the dv and hd material? The hd material is filmed with a sony Z1 and then converted to DVCPROHD..

What does shake do that FCP doesnt?
