Format Question on HVX-200

I am planning to shoot a short doc in the next month and am curious if there is a real benefit of choosing 1080i/30p over 720/30pn when shooting on the HVX-200. It would obviously use up much more card space since native is not an option in that format but if the resolution and colorometry is worth it, I will shoot 1080i/30p. Any advice would be welcome. Thanks in advance, Jim.

two camps here...the 1080 lovers and the 720p lovers. I prefer 720p24pN...gets the most out of the P2 card for the HD formats. 30 pN would be a bit smoother, less filmlike. 720 also allows variable framerates if you need that. I suppose 1080 would offer slightly sharper resolution, but 720p looks damn good. I suppose others will comment, perhaps differently, but that's my opinion.

Hi Jim,

There are certainly two camps on this as DGW indicated. You will hear that 1080 will give you about 15% better resolution. It's a hard one, if space is a premium when shooting and its not going to a film print I tend to agree again with DGW that 720 is dam good and you have variable frame rates if you need them.

Need to consider what the end output is going to be.

I haven't used my camera for a very long time but I didn't think it shot pN at 30 fps?

Thanks for the info. Yes, the option for native in 1080/30p is not available so the card space needed would be almost double to 720/30pn. It probably would produce a 15% crisper image at 1080/30p so I am checking on the shoot schedule to see if we could wrangle the added data management.
