Is 1080p worth the extra $400

So I was pretty set on getting a 42" Panasonic plasma on Black Friday, which is supposed to be $900 and similar to this: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...sonic&lp=2&type=product&cp=1&id=1169512771844

But it's resolution is only 1024x768. I could drop an extra $400 and get the 1920x1080 model right now: http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...sonic&lp=1&type=product&cp=1&id=1186004963573

I will be putting it on the wall above my editing system, as will use it for Digital Cinema Preview for editing, Comcast HD Cable, and Xbox 360. Since (hopefully) this will be last TV I buy for a long time, should I just drop the dime and get a quality product you think? Is the extra resolution worth it for my applications?

Thanks for any input. (oh I know it's not ideal for CC'ing, I have a regular JVC CRT for that)

If you plan on editing 1920x1080 HD material then I'd definitely spring for it, as you'll get a 1 to 1 pixel representation.

yeah, sounds like you have at least 2 sources that will benefit from having 1080p, but if you can, see if there's a black friday sale on a 1080p or wait until after christmas before the superbowl, usually all tvs are on sale then because of the game and new models are coming out so retailers are trying to get rid of the old stuff.

I have a Sharp Aquos gaming T.V. (37") that does 1080p and wow, my 360 looks amazing! even SD DVD's look really good (even tho its in 480). A friend of mine has a 720p tv and his 360 looks great too, but has a bit of a lag due to a slightly slower refresh rate.

I'd say for $400 more, go ahead and get it now and avoid black friday (i worked at best buy last year for black friday, but i was in Geek Squad so it was no big deal). You may not notice a HUGE difference now but in the future when HD-DVD/BD becomes standard, you will be happier.

Hmm sounds about right.... looks like I need to start workin right now! Thanks guys...

oh BTW I found Sears has the set for $1199....

arges03 - i recently got a reward zone coupon from bestbuy for 12% off the regular price of hdtvs. i don't know if you got one also, but if you apply that to the price of the panasonic, it will drop it to like $1083.

Running a Sammy 720p plasma right now. All I can say is WOW. I got a great deal at the time and it still gets me excited every time I turn it on.

If I was running a computer off it I would got for a 1080p LCD but for anything else a 42" plasma takes the cake for me. YMMV.

Well I dropped the money to get a Panasonic 42" Plasma 1080P - TH-42PZ77U.

$1799 @ BB on sale for $1299, PM'd a Fry's price for $1149, added 4 year warranty for $250 = $1469 inc. tax. It arrives December 8.

Now I need to hit up monoprice for cables, a wall mount, and ebay for a video card.
