Forget mjpeg, for now!

Seriously, there is no way mjpeg is now comparing with AVC for many reasons;

30p, hmm, do you want 30p!
massive file size, do you want massive file size
1080p is pushing the bit rate envelope, plus invokes huge overhead
720p, no we want 1080p.

Personally, everything I see in mjpeg am now seeing in AVC, in a much much friendlier format.

Try these, 60, 62, 70, am staying with 50i for now too, better RS imo.

The detail is incredible.

The one thing that MJPEG has going for it is that it is an intraframe. This means easier editing on less than ideal machines, and also no mud. This is better for Chroma Keying. Plus with the possibility of 4:2:2 color sampling, that prospect becomes even better.

With the higher bitrate patch for AVCHD, mud isn't nearly as much of an issue, but some would still argue that MJPEG looks better in high motion.

Will these work with 24p? I tried it and my camera locks up instantly. I'm using class 6 cards, though. Does this need class 10?

I want to see Barry's tests with these, think you'll reconsider;-)
I can't get 1080p MJPG to work at all, so ... no comparison test possible. (I mean, I can get it to write for about a second, so I can at least pull stills from it, but it's not practical for me).

I've gone back to experimenting with 720p MJPG just to be able to get it to work.

Barry are you using either one of these settings below?

***METHOD 1. 1440X1080P HDCAM FRAME SQUEEZE METHOD

MJPEG 1280m Encoder settings.
MJPEG 1280p width - input 1440
MJPEG 1280p height - input 1080
MJPEG SIZE 1280m - SELECT
MJPEG ENCODER 1280m Encoder -SELECT
MJPEG 4:2:2- SELECTION IS OPTIONAL - THIS ADDS OVERHEAD TO THE BITRATE- IN 1080P I DON'T SEE A MAJOR DIFFERENCE IN QUALITY- MORE RESEARCH NEEDED-
QUALITY SETTINGS [ 384, 330, 300, 276 ]
TABLE SETTINGS [ 24, 24, 24, 24 ]

**METHOD 2. 1280X1080P DVCPROHD SQUEEZE FRAME METHOD- This process gives a little more head room if you choose 4:2:2 color space than Method 1.
Remember 4:2:2 adds more data, and is still under research and not recommended. For best bandwidth performance- Don't use 4:2:2 in either 1080P squeeze mode.

OK...I think what you are REALLY saying is that YOU like GH13 - AVC. Noted. Very cool.

I hope no-one takes you seriously because the MJPEG has it's place/fan base/usage too.

I think one of the MOST COMPELLING things about the GH13 is this: It's like having 2 completely different cameras for 2 different purposes. And....I think MANY people on this forum will use BOTH in different situations.

Me...(IMHO)..and my humble life:

1. I AM FREAKING OUT to shoot HIGH-BIT 720P for filmic/artistic projects. (Artsy fartsy)
2. I am ALSO FREAKING OUT to shoot GH13 AVC. (As you have already celebrated.)

A Vimeo video posted that he will likely sell his HVX200 after shooting AVC with the GH13. I'm not saying that's smart or right...but I'm saying that I'm excited to be tempted!

:)

Your settings causes my GH1 to lock up and I have to remove the battery. I also tried 60, 66, 70 that I saw somewhere else and it did the same. I will say I turned 24pN on though and not sure if that caused it with these particular settings. I just went back to the C settings I had working flawlessly for now. I'm using a 4GB Sandisk Extreme II Class 6 card.

Hey, looks like success! For the first time, it's not locking up! Even with 4:2:2 color sampling on.

I've only shot one test clip so far, but yeah, that works.

Thanks!

I don't see 2 of the options you specifiy:

MJPEG SIZE 1280m - SELECT
MJPEG ENCODER 1280m Encoder -SELECT

I do see "MJPEG SIZE 1280m -> 1920m". Is that what you mean? Which one is "MJPEG ENCODER 1280m Encoder"?

I'm using the latest 3.36. Are your settings for an older version?

Barry, what card are you using? I have never been able to get 4:2:2 to work with 1440x1080.

Has anyone verified/compared 4:2:2 vs. 4:2:0 besides header info?

The "4:2:2" sample clip I looked at has quite blocky reds in AE, but it may be a MJPG in MOV container issue and decoder interpretation issue

OH SNAP! Watch out people....I ain't freakin' kidding...Barry Green w/GH13 w/4.2.2 w/1440 w/50+mbps!!!!! The world will never be the same! ;)

Having class10-or sandisk 30mbs cards

is important now, as things do get demanding as we up the bits, especially mjpeg. Note my class6 cards is working fine with 60,62,70 too on AVC.

Ignore those- they got rolled into a single patch ( MJPEG SIZE 1280m->1920m ) I got to update that.
