Footage?

As always, thanks Barry!

As always, thanks Barry!

Definitely, our life without you, it will not be the same: you are our man, our guru! (I speak for me, since last April from Europe...) We are reading all of your useful posts (dvxuser.com dvinfo.net etc.). You are a reference HD technology source, as all of you 'american users' already know! One day, it will be an indy (not only!) film festival award/prize with your name (Cannes, Venezia, Berlin, San Sebastian, Locarno, are you there?) for sure. For your work in benefit of all digital filmmaking community, like a Lars von Trier and his Dogma95 (for us - the 'indies' - Sundance, what? Robert Redford, George Lucas, Rodriguez, who? Barry Green, as well).

[PS] Only by lucky this post followed the previous one. There is who don't need defense 'cause his work speaks itself.

Are you a Panasonic employee?
Nope, never been on the Panasonic payroll, never been paid by Panasonic or anyone else to promote anything. I developed the DVX Book/DVD as an independent project. Jan found out about it and offered to share information to make it be as accurate as possible, which was most appreciated and for that I gave credit to both her and Harry Foulds as co-authors. But the project was an entirely self-financed and independently-produced effort by Fiercely Independent Films, Inc., my own company.

As far as inside info from Panasonic or JVC or Serious Magic or Sony's Vegas or wherever -- that just comes from nagging the people involved, sending enough e-mails that it sure makes environmentalists glad I'm not using actual paper! The influential people at these companies are not hard to find, product reps from all those companies visit various forums and make their contact info known. With Vegas, some of our footage has been used in product demos and was even included with Vegas 5 as a demo DVD project, so they know who we are (mainly my friends Pat Kerby and Bart Anderson, Pat was director and Bart was special-effects genius on both Essence of the Force and Siren), but I'm not unknown there.

For inside info on the HVX, Jarred Land has pretty much a "press pass" because this portal of his, DVXUser.com, is a very popular site and a major source of news for many interested people. So Jarred can get exclusive interviews with Jan, and he drags me along to do the writing. But DVXUser is a completely independent business that, AFAIK, has never received a dime of support from Panasonic.

But here's what it shakes down to: footage will not be released until it's ready. As Orson Welles would have said, "We will release no footage before its time." They'll get the fully-developed model, they'll arrange some shots, they'll shoot them and they'll release some footage. But they won't do that before it's ready -- it would be foolish to do so, and counterproductive.

Yeah, I agree. I can see now why they didn't release the ResFest footage on the Web. As Isaac said above, it would have been picked apart as if it were the final footage when it was only 80% finished.

how can it still be only 80% finished?

doesn't it get released this month? i mean i guess i don't care... i don't need it until summer 2006, but all this talk and rhetoric about the camera (as much as i love the DVX) is getting rather old...

As I understand it the product doesn't go out till next month. But that should still have given the team time between Resfest and manufacturing to bring the image quality up to 100%

It was 80% finished back when Jan first got it for ResFest, and that was back in September! Today they were supposed to receive their first fully-functional models, and the official public event is supposed to be at DVExpo on or around December 8th.

Screenshots by mid to early December? (maybe even earlier if we get some leaks on the web?)

Christmas comes early this year.

I'm sure now that the camera is complete (I believe), Panasonic will provide a DP with one to shoot footage for a new DVD. I assume they would have the footage ready for DVExpo.

if you're refering to the green screened flying car on that site, then it's already been dissassembled and argued and probed and prodded and violated by the board in a previous discussion.

what exactly is varicam? and, is dvcpro any better than dv or is it just a proprietary format? also, is there any major difference between hdv and hd dv?
