Footage with 2.0 firmware upgrade (cinematone 1 gamma)

99% of the time I used my own profile, which was just a tampered version of AB Range from AbelCine, I just put that back in my camera and up against Kyle's profile, it turns all the whites yellow. I don't know why, but from this point until Frank or someone else releases something cool, Kyle's seems to do the job quite fine.

All praise be unto Frank, for he doth tested the FS-100, and it was good. Lo, he used thy camera, tested thy profiles, and behold, he will sayeth unto us his findings.

But seriously, help us figure it out frank =) or Nirv

<3

I´m on it. But it takes some time, since they changed a lot under hood (and it´s not really documented), from what I can see in the moment.

Frank

This is what I don't get from Sony, why not explain what was done and make the information freely available.

It would be nice to see the shape of the new gamma curves and what exactly changed. It just causes unnecessary disruption to working professionals as we've got to spend time hunting around in the dark trying to work out what has changed and by how much.

It would also great for marketing too!

I'm hoping that the curves don't clip the red channel before the others. The problem was recreatable by filming oranges in sunlight and playing with the exposure. The red hits the ceiling and leaves you with flat orangeyness. Ditto wooden slats in a blind with sunlight behind it, big yellow splodge where EX1 and 5dMk2 looks natural.

I'm really hoping that we get that natural ramping off of highlights that contain fairly high saturation colours, as that was always the bette noir of the FS100 (no, I won't mention the 'other' camera's abilities here).

Not a particularly sunny day here in UK, and I'm shooting on building sites this week, so will try some people hi-viz jackets with Kyle's SP profile.

If Sony have got a 'sort of CineGamma' thing going on here, maybe I won't have to sell my FS100 after all!

Matt it's urinating down here on the south coast and very dark so not a good test of the profile!

I do have a general question for people, how are you all white balancing? Just using the presets or doing a balance against a white card?

Is there a difference between the two when you factor in changes to colour in the profile?

I remember creating profiles in my xha1 which would look very different when I used the WB preset or manually WBing. Just a thought...

I find Sony's reticence about this most odd. I can't imagine any logic to intentionally keeping these changes under wraps.

I managed to do some quick testing yesterday, and although I'm confused, I'm very happy. I think the IQ is just a full notch better, no matter how you slice it, especially with Kyle's PP (Thanks Kyle!).

The fact that Sony engineers were working on this aspect of FS100 development gives me hope that an FS200 may be in the works: same sensor with all the functional improvements of the FS700. That would be fantastic for those of us who are not so interested in 4K.

i am loving this profile a lot. Do you feel that you have to white balance manually though? It seems when i auto white balance the skin tones are off . Just wondering what others think.

Thanks

Thanks so much, Hulkster! Yeah, I balanced with a white card. I think, when you start messing with the WB setting, you have to go manual.

I still haven't updated so i will attempt some before and after tests when i do. Any particular requests (i'm fairly time limited)? I'd do oranges and sunlight but i've only got one of those around here at the moment and they're in a fruit bowl.

I too would love to know the rationale behind keeping this under wraps and quiet. I don't buy the stealing thunder from the FS700 because there is quite a cost difference and it's not a 100% logical choice from the FS100, i don't think everyone would have upgraded. This is all about keeping FS100 owners happier and perhaps more loyal in which case market the hell out of it. The AF100 has new (paid) firmware doesn't it?

Unless this is all wishful thinking and our twisted visual perception :) there is in fact no difference...

Or sony really balls'ed up the first attempt and this is 'quietly' fixing it to what it should have been (not the case i'm sure)

cheers
Paul

Bend a piece of paper to a roll and shine light on one side - best device to judge rollof.
Big white cylindrical coffee cup also does the trick.

Only request is that you used controlled lighting so there's no question of it shifting/changing between tests.

That and would love to see people/skin tones and a high contrast scene with shadows/highlights pushing clipping or even better some pushing clipping and others fully blown.

Well, I'm back from shooting using the SP profile, though I dialled back on the black level. Gorgeous results from challengingly lit Talking Heads.

Whilst it's not quite CG4 on the EX1, it's certainly CG3-like. Whilst I'm not doing proper tests, I haven't seen the highlight pollution that I saw on V1 software during R&G reportage shoots (inside dark buildings looking out against daylight with long shots on shiny tools and helmets - hey, titter ye not, it's a building site). I can't play until after 5th May, but the SP/CineTone 1 profile is definitely working well.

I really wish, though, I had the patience to shoot a fixed scene before and after the update with a few profiles. I intended to, but got carried away. Sorry gang.

Those of you seeing an improvement in the gammas it is all in the mind. My dealer confirmed they were not touched, they asked Sony directly.

Maybe the firmware update cleared out that dodgy preset you were using?

+1 on Dodgy Picture Profiles.

Even if it is a Placebo, it works for me. Homeopathic Picture Profiles. Whether this is all true or not, will find out when I have i) Oranges, ii) Strong sunlight and iii) the blinds in my mate's apartment.

Having said that, I've received an awful lot of dodgy BS from 'informed dealers'.

lol, really? Well i should be able to do before and afters on thursday to see properly...

that would make me laugh if true, not sure though, people here have spent a lot of time dissecting profiles. There's a collective knowledge here, comparing to one dealer. I also had one dealer telling me to wait about the FS700 and i do wonder whether this was the reason.

Rick, perhaps you can find out from your contacts if there have been any changes?

It might not be the gammas either, perhaps a different debayering method, bug fixes, colour conversions in the firmware

cheers
Paul

Yeah, I definitely wouldn't commit to the highlight rolloff being different... I have never found the highlights to be too awful when setting the knee to 97.5 or above. But I am fairly certain the color values are just a bit different with the profiles. Cinematone 1 is definitely less flat. But who knows... the mind is a powerful thing. Sorry if it isn't true and I just started this mob mentality. :)

I'm not so sure I'd blindly take the word of a dealer.
There was another post in which a dealer told a
board member that the UK firmware upgrade was
different from the Canada/US one and to NOT
use the UK firmware upgrade if you were in the
US or Canada. That dealer was wrong the
firmware updates were the exact same,
Rick can and did confirm this. Dealers are
human and wrong sometimes.

You need to reread what I said, the dealer asked Sony. The information comes from Sony.
