I may be getting a little ahead of myself as the contest hasn't even started yet, but I'll put this out there and see what comes of it.
Of all the aspects of filmmaking, editing is probably the one that interests me most. I love taking together bits and pieces from shooting and working them into a story. It's almost magical the way you can take a shot and completely reinvent it in post.
While I would like to practice editing more, my main challenge is getting good footage to edit. Even if I were to do all the fest this year, that would only be three shorts to edit, and pulling off three quality shorts is probably the upper limit of what I could do. I've looked elsewhere for footage such as old newsreels, and other public footage, but it's not the same as having fresh, untouched tape. Then I realized there will soon be about forty or more original shorts being filmed in the next three months here.
So to all my fellow filmmaking editors - would you be interested in doing a footage swap? I would love to have the chance to craft a version of some of stories that will come out of here, and would be very interested in seeing what others would do with my film. It would be even more fun to do it before the fest entries are revealed so as not to be tainted by the original version, but I don't think that would work timing wise for most.
As for the actual transfer of footage, I'm not sure what would be easiest yet - a transfer site like yousendit, mailing dvds, or what. This would just be for fun and practice, and I would be willing to sign an agreement saying so - if anyone wants to take it further, they could work it out between themselves. If anyone else is interested in this, or has some ideas on how it could work, please jump in.
