Some times in pans my test footage seems to stutter, you can see it on vimeo, on my 450*800 file anywhere

Its not my computer (although it could be my monitor refresh rate)

Is this a camera problem

Maybe its just what 25p looks like

It could be my tripod head (not loaded enough ? miller 25) but then I can see it in handheld moves (tracking across the desk)

Complex shots loading with data ?

I have a 45mbs, 8gb UDMA Sandisc ExtremeIV BTW

I would really appreciate people giving it a good watch - im going a little nuts

Downloaded the clip and checked it out ... looked fine to me. Any sort of judder was coming from the frame rate which looked normal for 24/25 . The outdoor shots looks smooth as well.

Although if the clip was 720 or 1080 it might show some more of its characteristics. These small clips tend to hide shaky/flickery movements from the eye a bit better then the large ones.

What does it look like in your editor ?

Thanks for your efforts

the 1080 file is more than 500mb and I ant be sure that 1080 plays on my pooter - I can see it in the small files and even on vimeo

You see moments..

wide pans shots passing the black monitors on the desk,

there is a short clip of palm leaves with light behind

my closing pan of the truck

I feel it is some combo of slow framerate and the way sharp near vertical edges stairstep

Maybe there is some stutter in the camera too

Some shots the cam looks nice too IMO

Point out some timecode spots of where it happens. But my first guess, like with all cameras, is going to be: turn off the image stabilizer when you're using a tripod.

None of these lenses have IS ! being 100-300 nikkor, 70-200F4 canon, 16-55 tokina !

Going through and looking at the times you pointed out - I'm not seeing anything strange in the footage at all. But maybe I'm blind.

There may be issues with my monitor graphics card or suchlike

but I can see it even with a small file so it should not be pure processing power

its probably just the 25p look which is not ideal for subjects or sharp bacgrounds moving across the frame

TVs where the pixels glow after switching off would smooth the look compared to a computer monitor

I dont own a TV - TV is for creating not watching _ watch films on my PC some of them look a little challenged too

Also I think i see in DVDs and Apple Trailers some softening of pans in post that may be part of preparing film for screen display

(a great exapmle of this is the film about nutters on a island ther is a shot in the trailer where a jeep moves across the frame, ovserve it frame by frame and you can see seirous motion added in post (I guess))

so the concensus is that my stuff looks fine apart from a boring subject and some focus errors

neither the fault of my lil canon !

Well I have been thinking the 7D looks more strobey than the XHA1 in 25f mode, and I just strapped them together to do a comparison, various shutter speeds. I think the 7D is worse, and the 7D strobing looks better when viewed on the camera LCD. Maybe I'm imagining it, but other people are also noticing something weird about it:

Don't think it's got anything to do with aliasing as it's there at quarter size as well.

The default refresh rate of a computer monitor is typically 60Hz. 25p will not look right. If you have a real 75hz option in the display properties, it will probably fix it.

Have you tried burning an SD dvd and seeing it on your PAL TV? Compressed playback in not always dependable on computers.

I only see an overall distortion in motion when the camera pans, but I wouldn't describe it as stutter. Rolling shutter is a little hesitant in motion, especially when changing direction of motion or when you have some instability in the camera holding. The readout method makes pixels have momentum in horizontal motion.

no - I have no TV - there is nothing to watch on UK terrestrial, but I am considering gettting a TV for exactly this

The last step in my conversion for m stills to motion - more money

Ind can you recomend a mac software for creating DVDs
