Yep, what ticks me off was the tripod was secure and I checked - I had the camera a few minutes before pointing straight up at the studios ornate ceilings, to the point where the camera was pretty much perpendicular to the floor, BUT IT DID NOT FALL THEN - have no idea why it would fall a few minutes later, LEVEL to the ground, but not a mere 2 minutes before when it was pretty much leaned all the way back...

AMAZING PART - same tripod had my previous dvx100 fall off in similar fashion 2 years before ON THE SAME EXACT DATE :Drogar-Evil(DBG):

So I'm well aware of the costs, and how shoddily the DVX lens is contructed...about $960 dollars worth of damage...600 for a new lens assembly, and the rest for labor.

I'm not too upset, as I received a Canon XH A1 the next day after this happened, so I really am not dependent on having a DVX anymore...and luckily, it appears the Canon lens won't break as easily - feels sturdy as a rock.

Sucks as the DVX in the clip above fell onto a ONE INCH THICK CARPET...and still broke - the ribbon cable connecting the manual focus ring snapped in half upon impact.

I somehow doubt the DVX is designed to absorb the shock of being dropped. My guess is the Canon would break too if dropped the same distance.

Now, let's see... You had the same camera just apparently fall over on the same tripod already (on the same calendar day, yes that is weird.) It would seem obvious you should be getting rid of that tripod, yes?

Or not shoot on March 19th ever again.

It was a different camera though the first time.

Embarassing since of course everyone will think I'm just a jackass, but IT WAS SECURE WHEN I CHECKED IT I TELL YOU!!!

That tripod is crooked!!!

I got the tire like rubber lens hoods at the local camera shop, cut off the plastic screw rim, and stretched it over all my cameras' lens hoods - probably won't do jack ****, but who knows.

and looking into the DVX lens structure - it's very shoddy...don't think it just collapse that easily on a thick rug...not saying it should be perfect after a fall.

What does secure meanto you? :) I know I sound like an ass here, I can't not under the circumstances, but I'm ot trying to be I promise. In my world, secure means that unless some *considerable outside force comes along and acts up the tripod/camera there's no way in hell it's falling.

* > or = to the force needed to push it over.

How does a tripod fall over unless either a) it's a POS, b) it's too small for the camera, or c) it's on a surface that is moving. Sorry.. again.. not trying to rub salt in your wounds or anything, just being conversational.

Tripod didn't fall over, the base plate came loose

Wow. This actually happened to me the other day. I don't have a nice tripod yet, I just use an old one from my dad. So I was screwing the camera on, and I thought it was on tight, but somehow it came loose and it hit the carpet from about four feet up. Something got knocked out of place, and it wouldnt focus at all. It was staying from like mf30 - 40 or something. So I turned it off and back on and everything seemed to work fine. I almost died though...seeing as that would have been the end of my camera since I don't have enough money to get another one.

I was taping something 2 years ago and had my friend running my DVX while I was on a roof with another camera, and I saw him trying to take the camera off the tripod. Then, in slow motion the camera fell and hit the hard concrete.

I nearly started crying! Luckily, besides a few scratches on the side of the camera everything was in working order.

Watching this conjured up those terrible memories and I could almost feel your panic as you picked the camera back up and started looking it over. :(

This sounds like something that would happen to me. However my DVX is probably the only thing I have that I have not dropped. What are the odds, same basic camera, same date, same thing.

I was filming field level football this year, and a ref running by caught my sunshade. I was using my fig rig at the time, and nothing broke. the camera turned sideways on the rig but that was it.

I will never understand my luck...

Falls 5 feet onto a one inch rug = $1000 bill

Falls 30 feet onto concrete - nada

Lucky you...well Unlucky then lucky you :)
