Footage from FX1 and HVX200 on same timeline in FCP 5?

Is it possible to have HD footage from the FX1 (HDV) on the same timeline as footage from the HVX200 in HD? I know they are different versions of hi def so thats the query.

I have put down a deposit on the HVX and should have it by March in the UK. But if I can't use both footage on the same timeline, then I may as well put the FX1 on ebay.

Obviously in DV mode its not a problem.

Answers?

This will depend on your nle. I know Canopus' Edius lets you put diffrent file formats on the same timeline....

Final Cut Pro 5.

I have a few weddings to do this year and would shoot and do everything in HD then dowconvert for DVD, but still have everything in HD for archiving. If they don't mix I will either flog the FX1, or do it in DV mode with the two cams.

I used a HDV 1080i/60 sequence and dropped some 720P DVCProHD100 in the sequence.

I needed to render, but I then ouputted it to HDV to a player, and it looked fabulous on a 50-inch Fujitsu plasma.

FCP 5.0.4

I tried to do some side-by-sides and it brought up the red bar and said "render". I keep meaning to go back and experiment with some of the "dynamic RT" settings (is that the right name for it?) so maybe there's a way to get it to play back at less-than-realtime speeds but at least show the footage. That's how Vegas would handle it; it'd show the footage as fast as it could, but in FCP in the current defaults it doesn't try to show the footage at all, it just brings up a screen that says "nope, gotta render."

I'm REALLY hoping that it can work Vegas-style; I do a lot of mixed-format editing and this "render" nonsense is not workin for me! :)

Barry- Try setting RT to Unlimited.

Steve- It's possible to mix the HD footage but probably not worth the trouble.

Worth the trouble for me since I have to mix behind-the-scenes 1080/60i with 720p24 HVX footage. :) I figure it is better to make a 1080 project and render the HVX footage up, since I have less of that. Will be doing that middle of march.

I did, and it is much more Vegas-like. Happy happy happy!

Not happy about the transition system yet, but hey, I'm workin' on it... ordered Diane's book so that should help clarify things.

And the digital cinema desktop preview is gonna be an expensive feature, I can foresee that I have no choice but to order a second Dell 2405! :cheesy:

Okay, now that I've taken the suggestion for the "unlimited RT", I can answer that yes you can put both forms of HD on the same timeline. It would take a mighty fast computer to play 'em both back in realtime; my dual G5 can't do it, but it's not bad, I'd say I probably get 15fps playback speed on the odd-format (i.e., if I set up the timeline for DVCPRO-HD then DVCPRO-HD plays back in realtime but the HDV footage plays back at maybe 15fps; or I could do it the other way and get realtime out of the HDV but the DV100 would slow down.)

I guess it's theoretically possible that a Kona card could speed this up too; one of the features the Kona has is the hardware scaling/resizing thing, and that's one of the tasks you have to do when mixing these two formats (because the frame dimensions are not the same, so one has to be scaled to the others' size).

You guys should take a look at the Nattress standards conversion filters for FCP. I used G film converter to mix 1080i Z1 footage with 720p24 Varicam footage and it works great. I converted the 1080 60i (non-cineframe) HDV to 720p24 DVCProHD. Takes a long time to render.
