thank you to Jason of ramjetfilms for hosting

it is big about 168 megs 35 secs long. 1920x1080 h.264
converted with mpeg streamclip from HDV 108024p fcp timeline.

info: a test shoot on location with lights and merlin.
repeat this is only a test shoot
enjoy

the color came out a little dab, but in final cut pro, it is very vibrate. I think it is the 4:2:0 color space that is lost when converting

Thanks for posting -- looks good. Can you tell us a bit about the light setup?

Thanks,
Paul C.

for this shoot we used:

3 * 1000 watts tota
650 omin kit
2 china balls with dimmer - 250 watts and 100 watts.

also it was a interior night for day shoot. we were trying to simulate nighttime.

we flaged the windows with a black flag and anything thin we could find.

also we brought some blue in from the windows so it would look bluish

thanks paul

it looks good... i could only click around to skip through because it wouldn't play for me, it keeps stopping every 2 or 3 seconds.

That was great looking, it looked pretty filmic! But the part where she moves her head and looks through the blinds seems weridly stroby or something, not in a 24p sort of way. Was it maybe the shutter speed?

I thought it looked pretty good. You might want to boost saturation slightly for the QT h.264 output.

Thanks for sharing.

I'm agreeing with Ecking. It looks VERY "filmic" (what a weird-sounding term!).

Especially at the end when you move in on her at the typewriter. That looks pretty damned film-like to me.

Saturation boost will work in FCP. Just a nudge.

ok got to play it on my mac and wow, that looks great to me!

I know it was just a test but did you change any internal camera settings at all?

Yes,
I took a hybrid of ncje's settings, and my own testing with a little color correction in post.

but with the A1
i mostly:
crushed the black
keen on auto
NR off
cinegamma on all the settings (if I recalled the second one cine gamma - cinegamma for shooting for film out)
and i think -3 on pestal and -2 on the chroma I think.
had the ND up all the way and light it from there to shoot wide open.
with the merlin - we were at telephoto for the DOF and my arm really was worned out

two notes on the shoot. we had a hvx on site running alongside. the canon was a lot less noiser and image was much more better (lost to the HVX on color though). we were both in manual mode on hvx and canon. (we looked thru the EVF) and when we captured, watched it on apple cinema display. when both were downconverted with MPEG stream clip, my CANON A1 was the choice for the production

very happy and the orginal file on a HD screen is freakish sharp. ohh I was in manual foucs with peaking and magn. on and AUTO INSTANT AF -the new system focus- to test some focus

Some settings suggestions for a richer look:

--Knee on Low
--Color Gain of +10 to +20 (out of + or -50 scale) for better saturation
--Black on Medium rather than Press. Preserve shadow detail and crush the blacks to your liking in post.

! Way to shake me on my HVX decision. I appreciate that. LOL.

And the film-like cadence of 24F is spot on. It looks VERY film-like.

I put the QT file up on my HDTV and it's phenomenal... when it actually plays straight through. I need to up my RAM, it seems.

Is there any way you could host the .m2t file instead? I would love to have it! And .m2t's seems to be less hardware intensive than H.264.

Elton's rafting video plays straight through without a hitch in my VLC player. OH PLEASE! PLEASE! ... Please? Do it?

It'd be cool to see the side-to-side comparison of the HVX and A1 in this lighting test.

H.264 is a really intense codec. I don't even know how Apple Trailers run fine on my laptop, but they do at 720p.

Maybe it's the 1080. M2T!

Nice one Phally. Might I suggest some kind of fixture in the room shot, whilst the light levels looked good, I thought she could have a more flattering even exposure.

I have a question everyone:

In the clip information I see that the resolution is 1920X1080, yet it appears to be Progressive -

How can that be?
I thought the A1 only shoots 24F in 720 mode, where for 1080 it only shoots interlaced, or 60i...

Could someone clarify that...?

opps sorry, I am trying to upload the quicktime HDV file, it is about 300 megs big and will be up by the afternoon EST.

sorry for the delay

The Canon doesn't shoot 720 at all, it's only 1080.

Also, I keep seeing people saying that they're setting the knee on "auto". I strongly recommend that you change that. Auto means that it can change on its own, just like autofocus or autoiris or auto white balance, and that means it can change on you when you don't want it to. If you see flickering white highlights, you can thank "auto knee" for that. First thing I do with any HVX or A1 I get near is to turn the knee off of "auto".
