Follow focus

Which follow focus is best: Redrock or Zacuto ?
What adapters and other supplemental hardware is really super desirable for the Canon 7D ?

The zacuto is a little better from what i've heard and likely more durable. I have the redrock v2 and my assistants have never complained about it. I'd make sure to get: follow focus, rods, good monitor w/noga arm before shooting much with that camera.

Most other accessories will depend on your application.

Zacuto wins on a very close race.

A mattebox will be very useful and I recommend Genus.

Check this site and philipbloom.co.uk for other recommendations.
Better than most magazine and on-line articles they have good real world usage evaluations.

What about Cinevate Durus? I'm just about to buy ff and hesitate between Cinevate and RedRock. Cinevate is all-metal. Redrock has plastic gears. Both are said to be smooth and have minimal gearbox play. RR is cheaper...
Another question - which gearrings? Redrock or new Cinevate ones?

What about the Zacuto Z finder?

What about the Zacuto Z finder?

What is the first accessory needed on the 7D, if my budget is minimal?
Is it the Z finder? Follow focus? Matte box? or what? Thanks.

It arrives Friday!

I agree.

I like my RedRock V2 FF.

And the Genus MB is very good too.

Zfinder is essential equipment for critical focus, IMO.

Can you not just check critical focus with the zoom feature though?

I lost respect for Zacuto after selling a hotshoe adapter for almost $200. Maybe if they said they are manufactured in America I would slightly change my opinion. Also it irkes me that they have a 'list price' and an 'our price' when they are the only ones selling most of their stuff. Also why do they sell the H4n for 50 bucks more than anywhere else in the world?

Sorry to rant. Just think Red Rock has a more professional feel to the company in many ways. But I respect Zacuto for what they do. I'd like to give the view finder a try sometime and see if it's actually worth the money.

Trez, the only problem with Cinevate's Durus Follow Focus is the 3 week lead time to get one. We're sorting through the challenge of keeping up with demand. We should be on our usual next-day fulfillment standard on this product by December. Durus is a patent pending creation that is 100% designed and manufactured in the US and Canada, final assembly/calibration taking place about 10 minutes from our office, by the machinists who designed it.

In terms of your questions on the FF, here's a few reviews that google turns up:

2. http://www.cinema5d.com/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=969&st=0&sk=t&sd=a&hilit=durus

We have quite a few RED customers and have since introduced a native 19mm mounting solution for that platform:

If you're still curious about features etc., you can view our online videos on the unit at Cinevate's Video University. Matt, I think you'll love our viewfinder enhancement :)

Durus carries a lifetime warranty.

Cheers,
Dennis.

Dennis you have PMs.

AS far as FF's go, it's a hard choice. I haven't had any experience with the Durus but I'm trying to find someone around here with one so I can evaluate.

Due to the clearance of lenses, so far the Zacuto FF has been great for me. I do have the RR FF V2 and it's also extra dope, I've just found some clearance issues with it. The RR FF V2 is also much easier to switch to dummy side for me.

The Durus looks pretty interesting, especially in addition to Dennis and Co's new FF rings which I'm also trying to get ahold of.

Artforme,

Just so you know, All zacuto products are designed, manufactured and assembled in the United States.

Secondly, we have kits on our website which we sell a little below list price (advantage to buying a kit) over piece by piece. The "our price" is kit price. Hope this clears it up for you.

Thanks mrogers, that clears it up a bit. :)

You should make it more clear on the website that it's manufactured in the US of A.

Best.

the Z-Finder is more than worth the money I feel like I could have just glued it to the cam seeing as how I never use it without...

In this order-

zfinder or lcdvf
fader-nd or just an ND8
at least 2-3 old prime lenses
juicedlink
shoulder rig
follow focus
mattebox

I just scored a follow focus made by Dan Diaconu in Canada. I'm gonna order some cinevate gears in a couple of weeks.
