If you're shooting video with a DSLR, and you're not using an external monitor, hoodman, or Z-finder...
Try a pair of those skinny reading glasses, the kind you keep slid-down on your nose.
I know it sounds silly, but damned if they don't work great for 15 bucks. You can go to any large drugstore and try out the different strengths.
I've got a 7" monitor which works well with my D90 and my Canon, but I tend to just keep it on my crane, sometimes I'll shoe-mount it on the tripod. I've found the glasses work great with the monitor as well. (I broke down and got some for reading-in-bed about 6 months ago, gave them a try while testing some gear last week). You can pretty much leave them on during a shoot since you look "over" them... or get one of those granny-chains...bling!
And they make you look all "intellectual", which is great everywhere but the deep south.
Maybe that's just an old-guy thing (50 is approaching like a freight train!) But hey, swing by a drug store & give it a try. Made a big difference for me.
