hi last week i encountered a strange problem with Fs-100 and solve it eventually, but this time the problem is more general i suspect, i am suspecting because of the response of Focus Technical Support anyway first of all here is my email to focus support :

Hi,

I have the latest firmware (3.0) for Fs-100 so i wanted to record at quicktime and quicktime PN modes ( while recording PN i am not using in camera PN as your manual suggested) anyway i recorded some footage and mount the drive to mac. the problem is i am hearing the voices of the video but no image visible only a pure white image visible thorugh out the video.

here is my setup :

quicktime player : 7.1.2
Imac : 2.16 ghz intel duo 2 gb ram
Mac os X : 10.4.10
Final cut pro : 5.1 Universal Binary

HERE is their response :

This is a question for Final Cut. Several other customers have experienced this same problem. They have been able to play the footage back through their camera, but when importing into Final Cut, they receive a white image. Others got a white image and audio playing too fast.

Contacting Final Cut(Apple) would be the best route.

so anyone knows what is the source of this problem and how to overcome? all suggestions appreciated.

Hi ,

first of all thanks for your response, i havent got the Pro version installed on my imac. i just have Quicktime player 7.1.2 and when i tried to watch in it the result is the same white image. so what might be different in Pro version for this particular error?

When you install FCP 5.1.4, it installs both the DVCProHD codec and a QT Pro player license.

If you don't have FCP installed on the Mac that shows the clips with white video and only sound, then the DVCProHD codec is not installed.

And that wold account for the white screen and only sound.

What I am saying is the license for the QT Pro player is installed as part of 5.1.

So you can open the footage from the FS and play it.

Secondly, I am saying that the DVCProHD codec is installed as part of the process.

Do you have that codec installed in the machine that is showing the video clips as white?

It is called "DVCPROHDCodec.component" and is located in the HD/Library/QuickTime folder.

i just checked the directory and yes i got DVCPROHDCodec.component file on my hd/library/quicktime folder. i am a bit confused now!

Then there is an issue with the Firestore.

But just double click on the file and see if it opens in the QT Pro player

no that was the first thing i did when i mount the fs-100 the quicktime player shows white image and sound only. the interesting thing is that Focus support respond to this problem as an general known issue and ironically they didnt suggest any solution only said just send an email to apple this is their fault kind a answer. this is really an bizarre situation if something is wrong with the firestore device as you said.

NOW i tried to watch the captured quicktime video on a pc system and and the result is now pure black screen and sound only. so its not a problem with i mac only in a completely different windows XP system the final output is again no video!!!
any ideas? i am really very annoyed right now about this problem and i have no idea what might be the cause?

ok then i am ignoring the pc results. also i tested other options and firestore capturing DVCpro 50 in quicktime just fine. it seems like problem emerges with the DVCPRO HD mode. and i am starting to believe this is more likely a somekind of codec problem. so david i am asking the same question again do you think updating from FCP 5.1.0 to 5.1.4 might solve my problem? what do you think?

could help. if you have a real version of fcp, you will also have quiktime pro, so you can test the footage there too.

If I remember right, there were several fixes for P2 support between FCP5.1.0 and 5.1.4. But I don't think FCP 5.1.4 is available for download any more. I think Apple is just supporting FCP6 now.
