Focus Enhancements FS100 Portable DTE Recorder just announced!

What I'd like to know is whether 720 24p will record at 40 megabits on the Firestore like it does on the P2. That's the deciding factor for me.
I think it would be foolish of them not to support that, and seeing as it's being developed "in partnership with Panasonic", how could it not? I believe it's simply got to; I can't see how it wouldn't, but then again, we have no confirmation yet.

At 720/24p @ 40 megabits, a 100-gig drive would give you about 250 minutes of continuous recording. That's over four hours. The other FireStores offer about 3 1/2 to 6 hours, so four hours seems right in line. It makes sense...

Oh, forgot to say....

Do we know if the drives are interchangeable??? That could be a big selling point

I think that's probably too much to hope for, since the picture they showed made it look like an FS-4. But that would be a killer, killer, killer feature. I recommend everyone write to Focus and let them know that that's what we want; maybe there's time to implement it that way!

Oh, I wish it would be that easy! I'm pretty sure that this is a financial issue, not a technical one. The early FireStores didn't even have drives built-in; and could daisy-chain a number of drives. In fact, ALL the firestores except for the low-price-point FS-4 include this capability. Being as the FS-4PRO allows daisy-chaining of FS-4PROs, the hardware is clearly there that would allow daisy chaining. So, since they have the hardware, and firmware (at least, extensive experience with the same firmware on FS-1, FS-2, FS-3), it seems pretty likely that NOT allowing daisy-chaining of standard FW drives is a deliberate decision.

Oh, wait... are you talking about swapping the drive, not just connecting additional drives through FW? I guess the same argument applies (FS-2 and FS-3 allow drive swapping)... the form-factor of the FS-4 makes this one a little harder to implement, but still, clearly they've done similar things before. I myself would prefer FW daiy-chaining... or even a driveless, smaller FS-4 that works like an FS-1...

Well, now I'm excited. Only what will I do over winter?

hey barry or jan - is there a way for the firestore option to be integrated with the camera in such a way that it can be treated like the P2 option? i mean can the metadata be attached with the video/audio data and even have scenes or sections deleted via the lcd screen like the internal P2 or is the firewire cable and protocal this real problem with it?

I don't know how much integration there may be... I'm just hoping that because they're working together, maybe there will be some... Jan? Any thoughts you can share?

Don't read anything into the lack of press releases from Serious Magic on the HD front. At the moment, two other projects are soaking up all of our R&D resources, but you can bet that we'll promptly shift to HD Rack as soon as those two birds clear the deck, which is imminent.

Mark,

That is terrific news to hear! There are very few shoots I do where I cannot use my laptop. It has a very small footprint and fits in my current DVX-100A camera bag. Makes a great monitor for the client and, if it can record DVCPRO HD, then I'm sold.

Regards,

Cre8tive

I can tell you this, the 4 hours of shooting does make me very open to the HVX. I may only use an hour or two of tape a day but with the FS I'll never really have to buy tape again except to output to or to shoot DV for people who want DV. Again my only concern now is the HD master. I may end up buying a JVC and buying a Panasonic later, but that depends on what Barry says about the JVC next week and what I see once this all gets taken care of.

I asked Jan about this at resfest in San Francisco yesterday and she said that she thought the Firestore was going to record the whole 100 Mbit stream. I pressed her a little, saying something along the lines of "you've got to be joking, for 720p24 it would waste so much". She said that Firestore doesn't ignore flagged frames right now for the DVX, and she doesn't think they'll do it with the HVX.

I agree with you, Barry, that this would be a stupid move on FS's part, but it sounds like that's how they might be going.

Any reason that I wouldn't be able to use my current Firestore with the HVX when shooting in standard DV? This may be a bone-head question, but I searched for an answer and came up with zilch.

thanks,

Jason

The current FireStore will work fine to record DV footage, but (as you already know) it can only record DV footage; it wouldn't work for DV50 or DV100.
