flutter at 24 fps

HI
I have just started to use my new canon XH A1s and I have some problems with formats and settings, mainly in SD if I set the capture frame rate to 25 or 30 the image flutters in the viewfinder on the cam I have to use 60i .

I am in europe and would prefer to use 25 fps.

I am just having serious doubts because I bought the camera in the US..

It's normal to have the video appear a bit choppy in the view finder. It's not recorded that way, though. I shoot 24f all the time. When there's fast motion and I'm looking at the LCD, it will definately look choppy. The recorded footage is fine, however.

Remember that even the recorded video at 25f won't be as smooth as the video at 30f or 601...just like with film.

Ho
Ok thanks for that information, it does not make for compfortable viewing though,..

Let me first explain what I do with the cam for now: I make 2 - 4 minute video clips for the web sites I run, so In SD format 16/9 :
camera > premier > flash > html.

I am still confused as to the standards though.
I can see that its better to have the same frame rate all down the line so say I shoot at 60i I am at 30FPS ( + no flutter) in view finder / LCD
I will then open a project in Premier CS4 at the same frame rate, so even though I am in Europe (I do not care about TV) I have to use NTSC or the new format AVCHD 720P 30 (1280 X 720) Same in Flash I chose same frame rate as original movie or set it to 30FPS
Now when I view this movie clip in say VLC Totem or WMP it is pretty good but when I have got the finished product in my web page I have lost a lot of quality and fluidity.. somewhere along the line I am losing something, my first observation is the size of the clip in the project 1280x 720 ! the flash video will be at most 400 wide, I realise that I am a novice here and I had better results with a small JVC and premier elements LOL But anyway if somebody sees something that ia m doing wrong please let me know.
cheers!

OK I have just been with Canon support and it seems that the Cam is set to NTSC I will have to send it back to canon France to set it to Pal
That explains quite a few things...

I suggest that you:

1) Shoot in HD rather than SD. There's no reason to shoot in SD and the HD will result in better image quality.

2) Since your final destination is the web, shoot in 30f only.

3) use the HD 720P (30P) setting (Don't remember exactly what it is called), or create a custom setting if necessary in Premier CS4 - (I don't use Premier often)

4) Since I don't use Premier, I don't remember if it can render a flash file or if you have to use another application to create the flash file. In any case, when you export your file, this is the time to resize it to say 400 x 226 (16x9 format).

Hopefully, that should cause your final file to play smoothly on the web.

Just saw the bit about the NTSC camera. If you shoot in HD and 30f and the final destination is the web, it won't matter much. But of course, if you plan to use it for other things, then you'll need to get the Pal option installed.

Hi there and thanks for your time.

1 / Yeah HD is cool and I have a PC that can handle it so its nice, just that in premier you can not view as you capture so you have to use the cam LCD, thats a bit of a downer with such expensive toys. You can log the takes as you go along viewing and do a batch capture after but I noticed that very often some of them do not get captured because it can not find it.. I think its a known CS4 bug...

2 / Yeah you saw that I can not do that only 60i...

3/ I find for what I do a AVCHD 720P 30 (1280 X 720) CS4 project is good

4/ I use Flash 8 to encode the FLV file

So sure for what I do it passes but I am angry with Canon USA and Camera Addict in NY where I bought it they new I was from Europe and they just did not say anything about the NTSC thing, I called them and they said oh we are sorry sir and actually the same camera with PAL settings is more expensive.

I had Canon France and they say that I have to send it in and they have to update the firmware to PAL

Anway let this be a lesson to anybody, (this is for google)
If you are a european do not be tempted by cheaper prices in the USA for expensive video equipment you might get a surprise as far as NTSC and PAL formats go...
:kali:

Logging + Batch capturing can put unneeded wear on the tape heads. I'd only do it if I had a HVx0 camera or a tape deck.

HDVSplit is a good alternative and I prefer to just let it do scene splitting and capture the whole tape.

Hi
Thanks for these answers, I will try this software and also I will be sending the cam to Canon France to get it set to PAL.

I had heard about the extra wear on the tape heads with doing shuttle etc but did not know about this with loging and batch transfer, I imagine that a tape deck is expensive so the solution is to shoot just what you need first go and capture the whole thing and then edit...

Thanks

I have just put online a flash demo for a client in flash, would it be appropriate to post on the forum the link to get an opinion of the final product quality wise The video not the content)
??

Cool

So this is filmed in SD 60i with the canon
project in Premier CS4 - AVCHD 720 p30
encoded in Flash 8 frame rate same as original downsized to 400 x 266
Its what I make for vacation rental sites in the area here.

There is a still image first set at 5 seconds...

That came out pretty good. No "flutter". I did see one transition where you could tell it was originally in interlace, but that was it. The rest of it looked fine.

interlace = the "i" in 60i. one frame of video consists of two fields of horizontal lines of video. One field contains the odd numbered lines, and the other field contains the even numbered lines. They are then "interlaced" together.

Sometimes when watching interlace video, you can see the lines. I saw them in one transition.

Progressive video like 30p/f doesn't have that problem because it simply full frame images instead of lines.

Hi
Ok thank you for that information, I just sent the cam back to Canon france where they will make the switch from NTDC - PAL then I will be able to shoot at 25 FPS....
