fluorescent lights + GH1 (.mts) + B&W + Sony Vegas 9 Pro 64 problem

Hey Guys,

I was running some tests under fluros and had flickering problems:

The crazy thing is that only Vegas 9 64 picks this up, viewing the MTS file directly in VideoLan doesn't have that flickering, and vegas 32 (on my centrino laptop) also renders and displays the .mts files correctly.

The camera was running in 1080p with a shutter of 1/50 (I live in NZ so we are 50hz). Has anyone else had this issue?

The Vegas project settings are that of the footage.

Any ideas on what I can do?

I am about to go and shoot a 48 hour film competition and I'm a little freaked out that footage shot on the day will not display correctly on any version of Vegas (32 or 64).

Comp specs: Vegas Pro 9.0c 64-bit, Vista Professional 64, dual core 2.4ghz, 8 gig of Ram.

Thanks

- Ryan

Barry Green will likely chime on this one, and he will tell you to set your shutter at 1/60. Should solve your problem in camera. Reshoot, and edit the same way, then we'll know if there's a different problem.

Maybe consider posting this in the GH1 forum instead.

I'm sorry if I didn't make myself clear, I live in New Zealand and our power supply runs at 50hz, therefore the shutter needs to be at 1/50, as far as I understand 1/60 is only for 60hz power supplies such as the US.

The footage plays fine in VLC and Media player, and plays correctly within a 32bit version of vegas (a trial that I installed out of desperation) on Windows 7.

I am reasonably confident that the footage is ok, I guess I just want reassurance that its a vista/vegas 64 bug and that others have experienced it.

Tomorrow I will install the 32 bit version of Vegas on the same vista machine and see if that works better with the same footage.

Ultimately what I want is a robust and reliable editing platform (hence the tests)

No worries,

Kerry Kerry is a nice part of the country, only passed through it a couple of times but a very pleasant little town.

Someone on Vimeo answered my question, its a problem with Vegas 64 9c, 9a doesn't have the issue.

That really doesn't make sense. Unless VLC and Vegas 32 bit are only displaying part of the video information, and not ever frame or field. Either the flicker is in the video stream, or it's not. What format did you shoot in? 1080p 24 AVCHD, or 720p 60 AVCHD? Of course if it is not in the video, then you have Vegas 64 bit doing some pretty weird stuff that you'd expect to see from a florescent light.

:edit: Whoops, didn't see the last part of your last post. So is it just messing up the video codec then?

Shot at 1080 25 - but I think the footage is fine, appears to be a codec issue with Vegas 9c 64 haven't downgraded to b yet, might just run in 32bit mode to be safe.

It's interesting that it doesn't happen with all footage.
