Flip HVX200 LCD Screen

OK, I know its been talked about and its on this site but I can't seem to find it. How do you flip the LCD screen image using a paper clip or something (making the camera think you're turning the LCD screen forward) so that it flips the image. I'm doing this because I'm using the M2 adapter. Can someone show me the link to the thread if there is one. I know where to do it but I can't seem to get the plastic covering out of the way.

Thanks!

dont **** with your camera. get some cheap plastic or cori-plast and a mirror and make what almost looks like a lcd hood with it. The mirror will show it right side up.

in fact - i think i should just manufacture my own and sell them for $25 a pop. Who wants one!

I would second the caution, I did it... I broke the camera. But since I'm out of waranty, I decided to modify the camera rather than fix it. So now I have a handy little flip switch that lets me flip the image at will. It works perfectly. We shot some Brevis footage on the LA subway the day after I finished the mod and it worked great. I am prepping a short now that will shoot with it over the weekend.

If it continues to work well, I will post a few pictures of the modification. I'm also planning to offer the modification as a service. As soon as I have the details lined up, I'll post more info here.

The mirror idea sounds pretty interesting as another alternative.

If you are using a 35mm adapter and a tripod, you can stand to the side of the camera and tilt the LCD up, but not so far as to cause the image to flip. Standing from the side you will be looking mostly down, but slightly back at the LCD, and it will appear right-side up for you.

It takes some practice to become accustomed to moving the tripod and operating the camera from this position. But it works quite well for framing static shots and for slow pans. On a bright day outside, I use a standard LCD hood to improve visibility.

It also costs nothing and doesn't harm the camera.

How are you guys breaking your camera by doing this? are you messing up the ribon cable or just cracking the clips that hold on the cover? I did this mod a while ago and have had no problems, you just have to be careful and have the right tools to take off the cover off of the hinge. Also, dont use a paper clip like they tell you to. Just use a small piece of paper to trigger the switch. This way you wont ever damage you ribbon cable. Shoving a piece of metal next to a thin ribbon cable is just retarded.

Great and I hope it continues to work for you

but bottom line you are opening your camera and exposing sensitive parts without any protection

sure you can live with a tracheotomy but you can also drown in the shower

3 weeks after having done the hack while on a shoot with several other guys "somehow" the ribbon cable just got ripped.

that's it $1200 to repair

In the original thread for this a guy had done the hack and worked for months just fine and then the little white switch just fell out of the camera one day

He was shooting in warehouse and it fell down in some grating and was lost for ever

$1200 dollars for repair.

In either instance Panny said they would just have to replace the whole LCD unit.

I think there is enough information in this thread for people to make an informed decision now.

Some people may have had no problems with it, but it is a risk. Each person can weigh voiding their warranty or potentially having some part just randomly fall out one day against their budget to buy an external monitor or desperate need to flip their LCD on the HVX.

I think a mirror inside a screen hood would work well (well enough to frame) and would be risk free.

But like I said I think there is enough info for people to decide now. Several people, who are not "retarded", have been screwed by this, several people have had no problem, yet.

I have a hvx and I called panasonic to get an upgrade firmware....No answer. I've done the mirror thing, it took 2 to 3 hours of my time to get it right and lite...et voila, and it looks good. I use a g35. Just don't get anything near the ribbon.

This is a little scary but...

I finally finished installing an image flip switch for the display monitor today. There is in fact a small momentary switch in the pivot base of the monitor that is activated by a cam that is part of the screen pivot. I soldered in two small wires to the traces on the ribbon cable then inlet a small SPST switch into the hinge cover and soldered those connectors. It took a small bit of relieving to the case near the switch to allow full motion of the pivot. I then tacked the switch with cyanoacrylate and touched it all up with a black paint pen.
