GH2 FLIGHT at the Museum

That was fantastic. I thought for a moment that you meant steadicam by "flying" but when the camera took off a few seconds in I knew this was something far more special! Especially loved the top-down shots from high above - it's a look you don't see very often, and the slight rotational movement added to it even more. Curious, what focal length do you use on the GH2 for this sort of thing? I would assume very wide.

You're a very talented pilot; is the camera mounted on a secondary motorized mount then?

Thanks for posting.

Nate, glad you liked it. We're actually using the kit lens on the GH2. Focal length varies from shot to shot. Most of the high stuff is at the wider end - it makes it look higher than it really is (we stay well out of FAA airspace). The camera is on a motorized 3 axis mount. My camera op controls it, and I take care of the flying. It takes a lot of communication (yelling back and forth).

On a side note, based off your profile pic, you're probably familiar with the last project I edited and produced, "The Best and Worst of Tred Barta." It ran on Versus / NBC Sports.

That was really exciting to watch. I think the slow movement made you forget it was flying and let you focus more on the subjects.

That was great! My favorite shots were at :40, 1:30 (I love the how the shot slows down and settles on the rider) and 1:50, I just like the motion of those.

The shots that starts at :29 seems a little muddy for some reason, while everything else looked nice and sharp. Maybe it's just vimeo.

Am I a bit overly fanatic by saying this flying disc of yours is the perfect alternative for every expensive camera movement imaginable? **** cranes lol?

All of this is incredibly beautiful. I really love those top down bird's eye shots as well. I have watched a number of hexacopter videos that were more "gadget tests" but this one is a truly great representation of the value you can achieve. Kudos!
