Flash recorder advice

cool unit for the price, why does it have so many faders if it only has 2 mic inputs? Is this designed for location multitrack recording?

p.s. I use the Edirol R-44, I realize that its probably double the price your looking for but the extra inputs are very handy, I had to drop my 2 cents on the unit. That being said, this unit, the DP-02CF looks nifty. Am I correct in saying its for multitrack since it has 8 playback and 2 recording inputs?

The Zoom H4 is under $400 and has a pair of XLR ins. There's a new version (H4n) either just out or coming soon.

With the Zoom H4n coming out at the end of this month (Sweetwater says week of Feb 22nd), I would hold off until then to see if it has improved much over the previous versions. It looks like a good unit for the price range. They say the preamps are much higher quality (the H4 had notoriously noisy preamps, which is a common issue with these cheap recorders), but that could just be marketing fluff. I'd wait for the reviews to start rolling in.

I'm really hoping they either improve the preamps or at least allow for line level signal recording through the xlr jacks so you could use an external pre.

The new Zoom H4n will have a feature that allows simultaneous recording from its X-Y onboard microphones and its two XLR combo inputs.
