C100: First Wedding Edit with the Sigma 18-35!

I've had the 18-35mm for a few weeks but I've just put together the edit for the first wedding we did using it (as well as the 24-105, tok and zeiss 50). Most of the Sigma shots are in the last minute for the party scenes, but it's also used for a whole bunch of detail shots (all handheld using just the Zacuto Z-Finder).

I just cannot overstate how amazing this lens is on the C100. It is THE DEFINITIVE nightclub/reception lens.

Yes I wish it it could zoom a little wider and longer and yes I wish it had IS but that's all a pipe dream @ f1.8.

In any case, check out the video. Everyone that has seen it has loved it im sure you guys will too:

When it comes to getting the job done, nothing comes close to the C100.

Very nice work! Couple of questions, I was hoping to stay within the Canon family of lenses because I can never remember (muscle memory) to turn the focus barrel the opposite way. Does the Sigma rotate the opposite of a Cannon? I assume so.

The party scene, what did you crank the ISO up to? I don't see much noise.

The Glidecam, which model are you using and I assume the camera is really stripped down?

Do you have a photo of your rig with the Zacuto? I'm trying to figure out how to keep it on the body if I quickly detach the camera from the shoulder rig.

The Zacuto EVF, are you happy with it? I need an EVF and am about to test out the DP4 just because it's larger, and I care more about nailing focus than the other features.

Lastly, did you use the scene file Wide DR or C-Log and heavily grade in post? It looks like you caressed it in the edit.

Thanks

I find the bokeh and general look is very different between the shots, what is the lens you used in the first shots ? It gets suddenly very different at 0'14'' on the side travelling, what lens is that ?

also a very different bokeh on the tele shots at 01'05'', again what lens is it ?

I really like the look on some shots, but other seems weirdly too crispy..

did you shoot C-log ?

nice work btw

The zoom ring rotates in reverse but the focus ring rotates the same way as the Canon.

That's the great thing with this lens is I shot the whole party scene @ f1.8 so I was able to keep the iso at 850 the whole time. Granted it wasn't the darkest environment I have shot it. I didn't use any noise reduction on any shot in this video though so I'm happy about that.

My filming buddy uses a full on shoulder rig but I actually go handheld with just the Z-Finder loupe! All the detail shots were handheld with the 18-35mm.

Yea the early slider shots were all done using the Zeiss 50mm 2.0. The ceremony and couples dance used the 24-105mm and the party shots used the 18-35mm and most glidecam shots used the 11-16mm. The bokeh on the 24-105mm definitely isn't creamy compared to the other lenses but the convenience level on that is just ridiculous for ceremonies and speeches where you just need to get the shot.

We did shoot 80% of it in C-Log, some shots on one of the camera were set to the C.Weed_5 profile though.

Which shots look too crispy btw? I put a +15 sharpness adjustment layer on the whole thing in premiere pro, some shots may not like it!

The glide shot at 14'' looks too crispy (to my taste) compared to the ones before (the introduction sequence looks nice, is it the zeiss ?).

so the portraits of the couple speaking on the microphone at 1'14'' is the 24-105 ?

thanks for the info

The introduction is a mix of Zeiss and Tokina.

The microphone shots are 24-105mm yea. You can tell the bokeh - whilst not bad - isn't buttery smooth.

Nice vIdeo! Sigma has just announced a 24-105 4.0, it will be interesting to see how it compares to "everybodys darling" from Canon.

Ok, thanks. the intro looks great. I guess the extra price on the zeiss is justified.

but I was surprised because I've never had this type of bokeh with my 24-105 !

Yea the Zeiss definitely brings a nice look but I only use it when time is on my side and definitely wouldn't shoot a fast moving event with it!

I'd be careful about doing that. I find (with Wide DR) a lot of the shots suffer from artifacting at +15 sharpness. Some shots can handle it, while others can't. Of course, it takes more time to manually adjust different shots to different levels of sharpness.

is it necessary to add sharpness ? I find the pictures rather sharp enough, out of the camera. I even put -5 detail level in the camera menu.

I developed a habit of doing that since I had -10 sharpness when using C.Weed_5. I think though that with my c_log profile it's not at -10 sharpness anymore yet my habit remained. I'll have to double check that!! Might re-render and update the video if that's the case.

Thanks for spotting it and pointing that out!

I used my new 18-35 for the first time last night at a small wedding. Loved it. No footage to show yet as still off loading but looks great. Seems to match the 24-105 I use for the ceremony well.
