First time editing t2i footage..too much frame dropping

-I have a 2.6 Ghz Macbook Pro with 4 GB of ram.
-Editing on Final Cut Pro
-Converted footage to Apple ProRess 422(HQ)

I keep dropping frames constantly during playback. I tried the regular H.26 footage and the ProRess Footage, But still i keep dropping frames. I have them stored on an External Drive(Fire Wire 800).

Is my computer that fast enough? Or do I have some setting wrong?

TIA

I did a disk repair and havei it on unlimited RT. I seems to have gotten better. I still drop frames every now and then. Should i be using ProRes HQ? or just the regular ProRess 422?

Thanks for the responses guys!

Simple answer. Single FW 800 drive on a MBPro is inadequate for ProRes HQ. I would also submit that ProRes HQ is probably overkill for T2i footage. You should be fine with a transcode to ProRes LT which should also be more than sufficient for T2i files. Don't even think about editing native H.264.

or just prores 422 - not hq. still 4:2:2 and unless you are doing some serious crazy grading, you won't see a difference.

ProRes HQ on a system drive is NOT gonna work.
27MB/s i-frame codec needs a MEDIA ONLY drive.
Use a dedicated firewire or sata drive.
