First time editing AF100 footage in Premiere

New to the AF100 and completely new to Premiere CS5, literally just opened it for the first time last night...but when I was looking at my test footage in premiere I noticed artifacts in the footage during playback kinda like a mosaic effect or slight distortion in certain areas...I tried to take a screenshot but it was only showing up during playback. So I exported a short clip and noticed it wasn't there at all. Has anybody else experienced this? Any idea what could be the reason?

I'm on a Mac with 4GB of memory and 1TB of hard drive space.

I'm used to using the FCP and P2 workflow as I've been doing the past 5 years or so and never had any issues during preview or playback.

Also, I was previewing/playing the MTS files directly from the media browser...was I supposed to transcode this footage first or something?

Thanks in advance...

I do get that 'roughness to frame edges' when previewing clips in PP CS5 but that completely disappears when the clip is dropped onto the timeline.

I'm on an HPxw8600 PC with 8 Gb of RAM...must buy more though. The card is a hacked NVidia GTX460.

interesting..i wonder if it's the same thing i'm seeing. it was 3 in the morning when I did this so I don't remember if it disappeared on the timeline, I don't think so though. It shows up also when I'm previewing it at fullscreen.

PP previews for me as well (on mac) always playback in lower res—regardless of MTS and/or mpeg files captured from tape. But, yes it does clean up after putting it in the timeline sequence.

AVCHD compression is challenging for the processor/GPU to decode on the fly, and PP works around this by showing compression artifacts on playback. 4GB of ram is very low for PP, they suggest 12 as a minimum, increasing your RAM may help.

One of the beauties of PP is that you do not have to transcode. Unless you're using more than a couple of layers and adding lots of effects, editing native seems to work just as well as editing ProRes 422 for example. But you will see none of the playback artifacts with ProRes clips. Some people will say the ProRes holds up to color grading better as well. The downside is time, and ProRes files are three to four times larger.

yea, see that's why i bought Premiere in the first place before I got this camera - to avoid having to transcode and i heard the ProRes files are so much bigger afterwards. i don't have a problem buying more memory even though 12Gb is pretty steep but just went to the apple store online and saw this "No memory currently available for that model"which is crazy since I only bought this cpu in mid 2008.

Top right of the program window has a little tiny drop down box. check playback rez , I think by default it's set to auto. Set it to full and the blocks go away but the frames may skip depending on your cpu/vid card. I usually edit set to half, knowing that the footy is fine. Skipping frames just tends to mess with my timeing.

are you on a Mac Pro 2.8GHz? I've just updated ram as well, but I never ever buy ram direct from Apple. I've been using Crucial ram for years on Macbook and desktop Pros (good stuff!)

ok cool i will try that as soon as i get home tonight. that's pretty much what I have it set to in AE (set to half). hopefully that will do it.
