first test shot with the dvx+reel-stream.com 4:4:4 hardware + micro35....odb gain, 85mm nikkor, one hard tweenie 650w with no gels or filters.. it's a bit soft from all the glass infront of the ccd's!! but I like it! has a nice look, did some AE color look on it and gave it a bit of a mask so it's hard on the edges

it failed to finish uploading on our server so the above link is a short version...

you need to have the cineform codec installed to view, it's native 1280x720..

For those who want to see this clip and don't have a CineForm decoder, simply download Connect HD from CineForm and you get the decoder for free (even if you install Connect HD.)

Very impressive clip obin
The andromeda continues to impress me. I do wonder however, if the resolution increase that the andromeda gives you is negated by the micro35, as it seems to make even the normal DVX image a tad soft. However, I have to say the the image does look very good at 1280x720. Would love to see the full thing. Good work.

Obin, love the footage
BTW, I was wondering how many different 35mm adapters you have tried out with the modded dvx? I imagine you like the micro35 the best seeing how you use it so much. Have you considered the g35?

It does render soft from the micro35...I have a feeling this is the nature of the beast as some guys in S africa are trying to make a feature on the jvc HD cam using a the P&S mini35 and they are having the exact same issues, soft images...but then again video is "hard" and film is softer...is it really a *bad* thing?

I kinda like the look, and I love the grain!

BTW this is the FIRST footage I have shot with the new hardware in the camera, it's the final 4:4:4, not the old 4:4:2 so we are getting nicer images..just incase your going..but you posted a while back with the "FIrst footage from reel-stream"!

Hello Obin

Just wondering are you using the MAC sculptor hd or the cineform codec in premiere pro, bcoz if I remember correctly the Andromeda works with an I-Mac Set up. Please advise. Thanks

Damien,

The Andromeda system can record using an Apple Powerbook or Mac Mini. You can then use Sculptor to export the uncompressed footage in either an image sequence(JPEG, TIFF, CIN, etc) or a Quicktime clip in any Quicktime codec installed on the computer. For exporting, any Apple computer can be used to run the software.

Since Sculptor exports in standard formats, you can move these files to a PC and either edit them directly or process them to a more manageable format. For example, you can move the uncompressed TIFF or Cineon image sequence into your software, and render the clip out in a WMV file.

Cheers,
Juan

I'm with you on this. I posted one time about softening up the HD look and took a beating, but I couldn't agree more that video is "hard", which serves its purpose. I don't think that HD looking "hard" is bad. I would think that the extra resolution would allow for some softening and really get closer to a filmic look. But what the hell do I know?

thanks for posting the tests.
