First Still Camera, Need Help

Hi guys, I have probably a really dumb question to ask that I'm sure is an easy issue but I can't figure it out and I don't even know if my GH4 is defective or not.

I've tried taking stills in the different modes (manual, aperture priority etc...) but when I take the photos it always turns out different than what the viewfinder image was showing. In Aperture Priority as I increase/decrease the f-stops and take pictures I can see the depth of field changing after I take the photos, but as I am toggling through the the f-stops and looking at the viewfinder the image doesn't change at all. It's like I have no idea what the picture will look like until after I take the picture and look at it. What's going on here? Am I dumb?

Yeah, I tried that and was still doing same thing. Maybe I need to turn the camera off and back on when I change that setting though, I'll look at it again when I get home

You won't notice exposure changes in auto exposure modes (Program, Shutter Priority, & Aperture Priority) except when adjusting Exposure Compensation. When shooting in Manual modes you'll have the same issue if using Auto ISO or Intelligent ISO.
