First Sony NEX5 Footage

You are talking about Red Trails? No dSLR on sight. Only multiple ultra expensive Sonys.

I see multiple ultra expensive Sony's...I also see a DSLR. Whether or not it's being used is another matter but it's clearly on site.

dslr vs real cameras again? fookmi.

We are out of topic anyway, but how much BS can a man take?

Bloom on the shoot:

"Both Rick and myself preferred the look of the 5DmkII over the other two cameras, there is something so unique aesthetically about this camera but what we also needed to do was make sure what we shot didn’t look so wildly different from the F35s that we could not cut the shots into the movie."

Not only did 5dII look better, not only will it intercut with F35 fine, but the 5d II potential was limited by the F35s:)

if you look at the footage in terms of photography, it would appear most of it was taken in early to mid-morning light, which is notorious for very high contrast and near-blown out shooting; personally i avoid early morning harsh lighting like the plague, or i use 4-5 flashes to balance out the harsh highlights and shadows.

it would be much better to see some footage from afternoon or inside shooting, at least to get a good idea of its capability versus others. not really a test in any way nor a fair way to say whether or not the camera is any good for video.

This pic worths a thousand of words.

A thousand words but how much meaning do they contain? One second from that shot used on the film would mean something. I bet Bloom could pull some strings to achieve that also. One second wouldn't hurt the film, but it would allow a series of articles that could convince someone to go to Bloom's site and buy an SLR with accessories.

This was a lot more convincing though:

Care to estimate the budget Emanuel? :) About 50 people on the crew credits hm.

Canon don't even have professional camcorders, but with these dSLRs, they make Panasonic look very amateurish in their marketing. The grasp of Canon on the online forums, the bloggers, the press, is out of this world.

Does anyone know what the accessory is from the Red Trails photo? It almost looks like binoculars, but both F35's have them. a laser measuring device? Sound? Stereo?

That would be a Cinetape, made by Cinematography Electronics. http://www.cinemaelec.com/products/cinetapemeasure.php

It's an ultrasonic range finder that gives a little readout to the first AC, which under good circumstances, should be an accurate read of where the thing you're trying to keep in focus is. They're pretty expensive, but they're also pretty common items on film sets.

Check it out. Not bad. I'm downloading the full version to check it out on my hdtv. It has zero technical comments though. I wonder about that vignetting...I'm thinking and hopping it was done on post.

The compressed version looks a little better than the camera file posted on the vimeo thread. Compression did hide some extra noise.

The mp4 is 25p. The camera file is also 25p.

Intentional vignetting I bet.

Dynamic range appears to be low compared to the Canon. Clipped highlights, hair, walls, highlights on fingers, etc. Skin tones are not as good. Compression artifacts on the original camera file do not look good. The Canon manages to preserve some texture, but this camera does not do as well. There is lots of noise on the entire clip, but that's probably due high gain because of to the small aperture lens (f3.5-f5.6). I hope that's the problem anyway. Head shots do not usually trigger alias, so we know nothing about that yet. No real camera motion also so nothing on rolling shutter.

It did look very low res and artifacted in most shots. Like an HVX200 on a third generation mpeg compression.

Guys, look at this camera for what it is. Nobody is planing to show up on a paying gig with this little toy. But it really amazes me that a tiny little camera such as this can produce this type of images. These days I do WAY more photo than video, but I like to have the option to shoot video and this is a great little walk around combo for everyday use. I've just downloaded an iso 4000 and iso 6400 that are perfectly usable for the web and for printing. That is amazing for a camera this size.
