First shoot with HVX?

Fidel, it's nice to see you here, again! You spoke well and wisely, as always.

Cheers!

The grab doesn't look that great, but hey this is just the first grab.

I am sure that there are loads who want to shoot in 1080p, and besides, as far as I can remember, I think it was Barry who said that, the majority of HD motion pictures are shot with the CineAlta, because the Varicam does not do 1080p.

As for distribution you are talking about your particular case, because I don't think everyone wants to shoot HD stuff for TV.

Now, with regards to under/over crank, how often do you use it? I haven't seen a movie that uses it in every single shot. You can count the number of shots that use it.

I really would like to see some footage shot at 1080p, and I don't think I am alone on this one.
You are not alone, for sure!

this criticism is to be expected. panasonic has a camera that is very highly anticipated and has lots of hype behind it. people are waiting impatiently for the slightest bit of news, grab, or footage...so when panny releases the first and only still frame from the camera and its just mediocre, people will jump all over it.

soon enough people will be shooting with this camera and we will be swamped with threads like...

"check out my first shoot"

"HVX footage"

"first hvx test"

"hvx test footage"

My two cents. We've waited patiently for this camera, all others have been released Sony, JVC, Canon - all have their cameras out. I think if they have a working model and the camera is ready, they should at least give it to Barry Green to either start his book or at least feed us the frame grabs or footage to the dvx/hvx folks. As one of the past post indicated, nothing has been heard about 1080P. That is bothersome. I hope they come through with what was advertised. December is just about a week away. We need more information about the camera. People want to purchase this camera but I think we are tired of waiting and pending a huge announcement about something added to the camera (ability to reverse the image would be good), there is no excuse not to give us more. Just my two cents.

Well said. I concur with you on this one.

Hey Emanuel, thanks, but I just repeat what I learn from Barry's comments. He is the MASTER!

I really don't know why Panny didn't give him the camera so that he could play with it.
Damn! This Panny guys are traitors. They should be sent to the death row.

Anyway, Barry I surely will buy your HVX book. Man, I loved the DVX one.

All the best

Fidel.

How do you know that Mr. Barry Green does not have on in his sweaty little hands as we type? I'm not saying he does.....but if he did, he would likely be unable to talk about it until Panasonic gives him the go ahead. I am talking about him having one for the purpose of getting an HVX book prepared and possibly a good article for DVXuser when the units are shipped. Not that he has one to use for production work. I hope he has one! But you never know!

TRUST ME dregenthal, the reel-stream looks FAR better then this "grab" and I am again amazed at how much data is in the "SD" dvx100a...;)

look at this:

Oh... Goddddddd!!! I can't believe people are judging the HVX off that one image. Geee... I wonder why Panasonic were so hesitant to release something. Perhaps the image looks just as the Director & DP wanted? Personally, I don't think it looks all that bad. It's obvious that they're shooting for a specific style - it's clearly not the default settings of the camera.

Also, maybe people aren't re-sizing this correctly in Photoshop. Depending on how you correct the aspect ratio in Photoshop, you can end up with some horrendous aliasing effects - done properly you'll see no real aliasing. Oh, whoops... they updated the site to include an aspect corrected image, my bad.

In regards to the reel-stream images Obin, posted:

Ummm... Dude.... so you captured an uncompressed image, it's not really that grand of a feat. You can do the same thing with the HVX and a good percentage of cameras currently on the market. Naturally, an uncompressed image is going to have less artifacts in it than a compressed image - regardless of what you're shooting with.

The fruit-bowl image looks nice, but the 'key' image looks awful - not the image itself, rather the effects of the key.

I'm sooo un-impressed with that whole Reel-Stream nonsense that it makes me all jittery knowing that people willingly spend money on it. ;)

I suspect though, that since you're a fan of the Reel-Stream gadget, you'll probably be happy if one shows up for the HVX. :)

***edit - tweaked it to try and make the smiley faces turn into faces instead of ascii characters***

***edit2 - Damnit, it didn't work... well it worked for one smiley. the other is still lost in ascii land. Sheeesh, I suck at all this internet BS!!***

No, you can't. None of these cameras have a digital uncompressed output port. The only one is the XL-H1 and it is not 4:4:4.

WRONG !
The HVX200's component output (or any video output for that matter!) is BEFORE any compression. The DVCPRO and other codecs are a function that are appiled after the fact. The color space will remain 4:2:2 though.

Ummmmm.... wrong!!! The only way to make your statement correct is by mis-quoting me and adding the word "digital".

Also, the DVX100 doesn't have a 4:4:4 digital uncompressed output on it either, so what's your point? You can modify pretty much any camera to do the same thing the reel-stream people are doing with the DVX... it's just, in my opinion, such a waste of time and money.

As far as I know, all of the HDV cameras have an uncompressed output on them. The HVX will have an uncompressed output on it. No modifications or extra expense required at all, and unlike the Reel-Stream product, these outputs are working at true HD resolutions with no computer based software hacks enhancing the image.

In regards to the Analog vs Digital uncrompressed output issue - the difference between them is so negligible that I find it hard to believe that someone whose obviously worked with both signals would even mention it. Of course a Digital signal is going to be better (mathematically speaking), but the visible difference is essentially nil. 9.95 out of 10 people wouldn't know the difference.

ciao,

I'm pretty impressed with the Reelstream option. It's a great feature to get the raw data from the ccds. A lot like using a DSLR. I think as more greenscreen examples are released by Juan we'll really see what Andromeda's capabilities are.

Juan, are you going to post some untouched greenscreen examples for the fickle masses to play with? :)

As icicle22 said, if I did have one I wouldn't be able to talk about it as that would require being under a nondisclosure agreement. Although I'm not sure my hands are "sweaty"... :)

And as far as the "no 1080p?" thing goes -- that rumor is like a confounded vampire. I keep trying to drive stakes through its heart, and it keeps popping up again. So, again, how many different times and how many different ways do they have to say "yes" to 1080p before people will stop doubting whether it's there or not? Look at the HVX webpage, it clearly says 1080/24p and 1080/30p. Heck, they've gone and announced that the chipset works by sampling a 1080/60p image off the chip, and then creating 1080i or 720p off of that! 1080p is the CORE of the camera! Why on earth would you think that the ability to record 1080p has somehow magically disappeared now?

It absolutely, positively, unquestionably, now and forever and until the end of all time, without a doubt, in the first version, in every version ever made thereafter, WILL have 1080/24p and 1080/30p in the US version, and 1080/25p in the European/Australian version.

Harlan, FYI, who you're discussing that with *is* the reel-stream people... "pertierr" is Juan of Reel-Stream.

harlan: This is getting way off topic, so all i'm going to say is that your claims are grossly inaccruate, and not by force of opinion but by technical fact.

No, honestly I didn't know that he was the reel-stream people, but none the less, he miss-quoted me.

Grossly inaccurate???

All of the HDV cameras don't have uncompressed outputs on them??? Geez, you'd better go tell the manufacturers.

The HVX doesn't have an uncompressed output on it??? Wow, Panasonic certainly begs to differ.

Your Reel-Stream product is a hack to the camera, and it costs money, correct?? It can also, theoretically be performed on any of the new cameras (given the amount of time & investment you've put into the DVX mod).

If you want to talk about "Grossly Inaccurate" perhaps you should go read the spec sheet on your product.
