First Music Video

Looking for constructive criticism on our first music video. The client wanted an early 90's (San Andreas lol) feel.

I see a lot of potential, just think it needs more work.... Visually and technically.

First of all try using a reflector or catching the natural light from the sun when shooting a project. The artists face looks very dark and in general whatever filter or effect you use makes the project look kind of bland.

Visually you need to capture more.... The artist inside of the home, the props, the feeling, the mood, the behavior of everything going on. Where exactly are they from? Where is this at?

What I did like is the song is good and it's a natural video. No fluff and just real music being spoken. Also had some pretty good angles, but also some of them were kind of shaky, maybe find some form of stabilization or just make your edits faster.

Here is an example of a perfect video that should give you some ideas... Keep working you can do it.

Thanks for the criticism so far, guys. Especially vision_filmz. I actually watched the Big K.R.I.T. video for the first time yesterday. I completely agree with you concerning the gradient but unfortunately that was what the client wanted.

Respect! Very difficult finding that balance between what the client wants and sometimes what you may think looks better. Regardless the most important thing is you are creating history by capturing time and showing someones life. Keep at it & practice your skills everyday (not just you everyone even myself).

If anything just show the viewer more about what is happening, where they are from, why is it that they are making this song... You know the inner details that makes someone an artist.

Regardless this is only my opinion, keep working and creating what makes you Happy

Don't you hate it when the client is stuck to their ways about the portrayal of their song? Just keep on working at it and hopefully you'll have a project where your creative input allows the video to shine.

You're both right. Finding that balance is like walking a tight rope but then again I suppose I should probably have put my foot down in the lighting department a little more. However some aspects of the video were pretty much un-negotiable. The porch was one he grew up on so it had to go in there (regardless of the fact the sun was setting on the other side of the house). The ballcap was another issue too because of the shadow it introduces on not only the face but especially the eyes. Still a good learning experience on not only the visual and technical side of videography but the business side as well.
