First Look, Panasonic AG-AC90 at DVExpo West

You may want to lower the detail for wedding. I like my picture nice and sharp. Check out the Skin Detail......it is set to OFF. However, you may choose to set it to "ON." ALSO.....you may want to bring the DRS up to#2.....no further as it will introduce some noise in the dark areas. I am now keeping the DRS on #1 after experimenting with outdoor shads. See my YOU TUBE clip above.

Thanks to whoever took the time to figure out these settings. There sure is a lot of variables. I am going to print those pages of the manual with those settings marked.

Jan or Berry how would the AG AC90 cut with a HPX 250 it seem that the AC90 might be a better run and gun cam than the 250, in a production where the locked down interviews were shot on the 250 and intercut with AC90 footage might be great but how do you think they compare image wise?

I would think in bright-enough conditions that you can avoid gain, they should match quite well. Haven't tried, but they both have solid imaging cores and should produce similar enough results. The DRS and the knee are different between them though, so you would have to take care to use settings that produce similar results between them.

I have a question about the stabilization on the AC90 vs a Panasonic consumer cam. The AC90 description is: The AC90 includes; a five-axis image stabilizer that dramatically improves stabilization for hand-held shooting. I plan on upgrading my HMC40 to the AC90 but also thinking of getting the small HC-V700 as a 'B' camera. It's stabilization is described as: HYBRID O.I.S. + uses five-axis correction to thoroughly suppress blurring all the way from wide-angle shots to powerful zoom shots. Are these the same systems?

Probably the same. Both are called "Hybrid" OIS, so I would assume they're the same or similar technology. But that's only an assumption, of course.

When you compare the AC90 stabilization to the Panasonic consumer cam, they both do a stellar job at mitigating shake in static shots, zoomed or wide. The difference is the improvement by the AC90 once you start panning or moving the camera. The consumer cam is more jumpy, the field curvature changes as the stabilization element is shifting. The AC90 has a reduced tendency for overshooting the frame as you decellerate from the panning movement.

xf100 or ac90

xf100 or ac90

hmm, xf100 or ac90? that is the question for me. The canon 5d mark iii for low light creative shots, just need a partner for general video needs.

Hi All,

I've been watching this thread with great interest, as I'm buying one of these sight-unseen in Australia, and doing it before the end of Nov to take advantage of a SD card/reader by redemption promo.

I'm very much a novice, so alot of the stuff you guys are talking about is going over my head, and also, no matter the specs, I know this camera is going ot be better than the 7 year old, single sensor consumer pana I've been using.

Given the camera is now shipping in the US, I've really been waiting to see more footage in this thread, so I googled, and am posting here in case this is helpful to others also.

Cheers

Couple more questions for AC90 owners. How well does the photo option work while recording video? Also how is the quality of frame grabs?

Thanks.

You can take photos while recording, and they will be at the full 3-megapixel quality. You can also extract a frame grab during playback, that will be at 1920x1080 res.

Here's a quick video I made with it. Just simple editing. This is pretty much my first time using it (im used to Canon DSLRs).

Hi Joel

At last someone did a bit of filming with people!! I was really wanting to see some skintones both indoors and outdoors !! The 90 handles people and real life very well I think!! I didn't see any moire as well ..bet the Canons would have shown up that somewhere!

Thanks man. I used the settings from the previous page...minus one change or two. Turned out pretty good. Still learning it. Filming a wedding on December 1st. Plan to use this cam, along with 2 Canon DSLRs and a Gopro cam. Ill post some footage here early next month.

Hi Joel

Good luck with that. The 90 should do a good job at the wedding. If you are stuck on settings you can also just set the camera to iAuto and it will set the scene file settings as well as exposure and the rest to suit the lighting conditions. With the GoPro, stick it on a light stand and hoist it up around 8' in the air and have it in the aisle (if it's a Church wedding) You can then get a semi-aerial shot of the entire ceremony that NO-ONE can accidentally block and it has saved my bacon quite a few times when my main camera has filmed the mother of the bride's ample rear end as she blocks the camera!!! My GoPro always gets set up at every wedding I do!! Don't leave home without it!!

Panasonic AG-AC90 and Green Screen

Panasonic AG-AC90 and Green Screen

Greetings Jan, Bob and Barry,

I want to thank everyone for sharing such insightful information about the Panasonic AG-AC90. I’m considering using the AC90 or the GH3 to shoot web videos, dramatic short films and documentaries. Would you please be able to answer the following questions:

How will the Panasonic AG-AC90 work with doing green screen projects?

Can one use FCP X to edit the AC90 footage without any technical difficulties?

Is there any mic noise during recording when using an additional attached mic?

What mic or mics would you recommend using with the AG-AC90?

Would the GH3 be a better choice for shooting web videos, shorts and docs?

I read that when focusing manually the focal ring is not quick to respond. Can you comment on this?

How does the Canon XF100 compare to the Panasonic AG-AC90?

Thanks!
