First imressions 5D vs 7D moire

I know you can't draw any real conclusions about the moire from a vimeo download, but the crazy color thing that the 5D does with patterns seems to be much more acceptable on the 7D. The picture was taken from a test that Philip Bloom did.

I was thinking the same thing about the chroma artifacts. More tests necessary. Zone plate chart would be great, should anyone happen to have one hanging around.

Philip said specifically not to judge anything like that based off the test. He takes no responsibility for what Vimeo may have done to the image.

And I've got a magnificent chart, a fancy new DSC Labs MegaTrumpet 12, just waiting for a 7D to put it to the test...

you're right...that's why I prefaced my post the way I did...but I am mostly talking about the chroma artifacts which will come through on vimeo as well if it exists in the source footage. Can't wait to see your tests Barry

Just looking at the download footage and on Vimeo, the 5D has more aliasing and moire artifacts, look at the diagonal edge of the glass of the candle cup, there is more aliasing there with the 5d, look at the bottom of the blinds where they were all very close to each other, there are much more moire pattern there on the 5D, for sure there are much more noise on the 7D, not scientific but so far that is what I see.

And Barry comes through once again!

My decision to purchase a 7d will be largely based on Barry Green's evaluation. Not to put pressure or anything.

I'll publish anything I find. But be aware that I've already seen enough to make me spend the dough to get one. My decision to get one was largely based on the GH1; the GH1 was so good as-is, and I still love it, but to have native 24p recording instead of 24p-over-60i, and to have a more mud-free codec, those two things were enough to push me into the "gotta order one" category.

Barry, can you elaborate on the "mud-free codec" part?

I'm not Barry, but I'll do my best.

GH-1 uses a rather weak version of AVCHD at ~17Mb/s. This, along with the sensor and other electronics, turns out to be great for producing beautiful stable shots: fixed tripod shots, gentle slides, controlled dolly movements, etc.

However, quick camera movements, especially when shooting a high detail frame, can cause the codec to "break" - to encode the sensor information in a way that is not at all pretty. It can cause massive macroblocking and quickly bring the image quality far below acceptable limits.

The Canon 7D uses a much higher bitrate codec at around ~47Mb/s. This increase in bitrate appears to alleviate the "mud" problem in all but the most extreme conditions.

Really, its just a weakness, like every camera has. If the CO or DP knows about it, knows how to prevent it, and the shot doesn't require a whole bunch of run and gun whip pans, there won't be much of a problem. Of course, if the shot does require all that, reach back into the toolbox for a different tool :)

And again, Barry, thanks for going and getting a chart like that. I almost bought one until I saw the price. Ouch! I don't even have my audio gear yet!
