Downconverting 720 to uncompressed SD should look better than shooting DV50 to start with becuase of oversampling of the image. DV50 is still a compressed SD format.

Michael,
please help me understand this?

If you shot 720 from the HVX, that's a compressed format. So, even if you downconvert to SD uncompressed, you can't get back what you lost from the original 720 compression.

Also, DVCPRO50 is less compressed than DVCPRO100.

Having said that, I guess it's still possible that the downconvert SD uncompressed might look as good, or better. We'll soon know the answer to this.

I can say the 640x360 downconverted 720 basketball mp4 file I've seen here looks great, especially since it's only 360

Speaking of which, how does one view uncompressed footage in your NLE? I imagine at one VERY slow frame rate based on CPU/MEM/IO speed.

720 gives 480x720 for chroma.
Dv50ntsc gives 360x480 for chroma.
It you aim to 720x480 4:4:4, you get better resolution with 720.
Only problem is that 720 has much heavier compression, so with lots of details things might turn around.
It would be optimal if it would be possible to use dv50's mild compression with 720 at 100Mbps.
