Interesting that Kato is using iPod as backup

Interesting that Kato is using iPod as backup

Interesting that Kaku is using an iPod (either 1st gen or via adapter) as a backup device for P2 cards.....

i know this reformats the iPod drive but if your only concern is to use the iPod as backup *and not for music, than it can be an alternative portable storage device gar cheaper.

there might be a little market for used iPods just for this use......it was a good report...thanks for the link!

hello all, i'm a las vegas filmmaker. after reading some of the posts, i just wanna tell a little story to hopefully ease some indecision out there. a year and a half ago when i got into this business, i bought the dvx100a, and really loved the camera. one of my biggest problems with it was no 16x9 native. then i saw the sony z1u at nab 2005 and fell head over heels. traded in my dvx for the z1u figuring that the cam would be in great demand for freelancing. well as soon as i get the z, then everybody and their grandmother wanted 24p. needless to say, i'm still pissed about that decision. don't get me wrong, the z shoots a nice picture and shooting pal and dvcam also, it seemed like a no brainer, right? wrong. when hd is downconverted, (maybe it's me) but it don't look too good. since the only dvd player that i've seen play hd dvd's is a power mac g5, making hd dvd's for other people is not an option.
fast forward to now. the biggest reason for me getting the hvx is not the hd, which by the way is very nice at 24p, but the dvcpro50 24p. you see, unless you have a client that wants hd, you're going out to a film blowup or you're going to network that supports hd, why shoot hd. have you seen dvcpro50 24p lately? it is the best thing in sd, and i hear dvcpro 30p is off the hook for the video look. and if all else fails, then you have a native 16x9 dvx in your hands with better glass. the dvcpro 50 24p keeps me from having to sell the house for the sdx900, and when i need hd, i have hd at 24p with variable frame rates even. so for all of you going back and forth on this 1080, 720, how does the footage look tangent, just keep in mind that you have a camera that gives you interlaced, progressive, 1080, 720, 480, 60i,60p, 30p, 24p in all modes with over and undercranking capabilities. (sorry for long ass sentence) this is the best camera out there for under $10,000, and it's true hd. hdv just ain't gonna work for me, interchangible lenses or not. (sorry for the long rant)

This was an interesting read, Barry. Thanks for posting the link. Hope he continues to post more reports.

Yes, that was an interesting read but what does the footage look like? Is it noisy or not? In the end the only thing that really matters is how good the video footage from the HVX looks.

Can I get a witness?

5ive : at least that is the argument Jan C.-L. and Barry Green always tells us so I am also interested in the noise level aspecially at low light with and without gain. HD is not important for me so if it is good in DVCpro50 I am very very happy since for me true 16:9 and P2 technology are the only reason to buy this cam

At least until Blu-Ray becomes available!

Wow, many of you are just getting in the game and I cannot tell you how lucky you are!! I have been in the business since 1980. I almost gave it up last year to pursue another career. The HVX is coming on-line at the right time. I looked into rental/purchase of the Sony 900 or a VariCam, but I just could not bite the bullit. And this is after years of buying 3/4" gear, BetaCam Gear etc... I could have had a Rolls Royce now for all the money I have spent in the video business!! HD delivery will be a reality in short order. Many of my clients are expressing interest in HD. But finally, I will have a tool in hand where I can control (somewhat) my destiny in the business.

I feel you bud. It's a fine line to walk on. About 2 years ago I decided not to invest in any equipment other than post/graphic equipment that I could use for SD/HD. I have held off buying my own video camera since selling my film one.

But, the time is coming....

I just have to say that after reading all of these threads about this camera that it is not equipment that makes you or breaks you in this business. Your reputation, quality of your work and how you run your business are what are important. Granted, making wise decisions about what equipment to purchase helps provide you with tools that allow you to satisfy your needs and those of your client.
These tools become available to all of us over a given period of time. My clients call me and hire me because of my relationship with them and my reputation. If I can provide them with a new service, yes they appreciate that.

And if you are just an independent film maker looking to make a film, this product will not detemine whether you make a successful film or not. Everyone will have access to the same tools. Those who are determine and passionate will go on to make quality docs, movies, tv and other media with whatever tools are around at the time. After this camera comes out, everyone will move on to the next great thing to come out next year. Sorry for the rant.

No, but it will allow you to shoot more footage which might not be possible due to the expensive costs of film (for ultra-low budget filmmakers), and with the new camera, it will make switching to video easier to swallow because of the higher quality. I never thought DV was good enough, but I have been very pleased with what I have seen and heard about the HVX.

Other than that, I agree with everything you said.

Hey Cees,

I'm not sure what's happening in the Netherlands,(in terms of tv transmission) but on this side of the pond we're going completely digital transmission in two years and the demands for HD content will increase. So it is important for HD at an affordable level that looks good. And with all the cool stuff that the HVX can do will not count if the footage shot with the camera in noisy.

I must admit though, I doubt it's noisy. I'm sure Barry or Jarred would have said something. I'm just trying to get the rumors of noise dispelled. It would be good to get more info from Movieola and there renewed efforts in producing a film out from the raw HD files shot with the HVX. (They complained about some noise in the mid-tones as well)
:)

I keep hearing people say "why shoot HD unless you have HD capability" but I have to say it still looks better than standard def on a standard def broadcast. When I shoot HD 24P with a basic lens and shoot standard def 24P with a basic lens, the HD 24P still looks so much nicer on a standard def TV. I don't know if it's like saying "why shoot 35mm unless you can project on a movie screen" but it's close.
On TV 35mm film still looks cleaner than 16mm film.

So for me, if I have the HVX200 and shoot the 720 over the standard def, I can only imagine even down converting to DVD or something it will look better (not to mention the ude of the variable frames).

In Europe digital does not equal HD.
We've had digital brodcasting in most of the countries for years, but HD is just starting this year with satellites. No terrestrial HD before analog shut off (ASO), because there's not enough frequencies before that.

downconversion won't look better than dvcpro50 24p

Downconverting 720 to uncompressed SD should look better than shooting DV50 to start with becuase of oversampling of the image. DV50 is still a compressed SD format.
