hmmm.... I would like a HVX in a hd100 body... and the possibility to record ProHD too - got to shoot my sister-in-law's wedding tomorrow... it certainly wouldn't fit on a P2 card.

Exactly my thoughts. HVX is a camera with pro features on a proconsumer body, and it's to heavy for handheld.

I see the HD100 like a SD camera with the HD option, I will certainly use the DV format for now but when the time comes I'll be able to use HDV. As a SD camera HD100 is unique, there is no other pro camera for the same price and with the ability of shooting real 16:9. Ok, the image quality is not perfect, however it is very good. I wasn't expecting much more from a 6000€ camera, and I'm glad that finally I can buy a really professional camera and stop spending lots of money renting other's cameras. I think that you guys were expecting to much from it, keep in mind that HDV is not HDCAM or DVCPRO HD, but is better than DV and you won't pay more for that.

HD100 will help me grow my business and maybe some day I can afford a HDCAM... I hope!!

Well not sure if i find HDV better than DV.

Resolution isn´t everything. In fact I find the HVX200 intresting for its DVCPRO50, 16:9 and slowmotion capability. The HDTV part is more like a bonus :)

So until i see a better picture of the HD100 i rather invest in photozoom pro and still use my DVX.

You can't pipe a signal from your editor over to an HDV camera through the firewire and have it display on the monitor. You can print-to-tape, of course, but you can't preview/scrub etc.
Well that does it. I'm staying in SD-world for now. Maybe I'll pop for the HD-XXX or the HVX-XXX when it comes out, AND when I've finally re-invested in developing a ProHD/DVCPRO50/100 workflow (and the workstation to go with it).

Strangely enough, most people who USE HDV are very happy. Only the ones looking through the fence have so many doubts...

Now you can even choose your flavor of HDV, interlaced (Sony) or progressive (JVC). It's a very nice moment, and when the HVX will be out, even better. The great thing is that there will be three or four really different HD camcorders under 10.000$...

Yes and the user thats are happy with HDV can stay happy.

But many users wants more than just resolution. Colors, latitude, Compression etc.

And ive yet to see a HDV camcorder that can give me DVX like pictures with HDTV resolution.

HDV is a very nice format with it's limitations.

All formats are limited in some way or another. The more powerful ones (HDCAM SR, 70mm) are limited too, if nothing else, in the price.

Users in forums are really incredible. They want a big camera to impress clients, but little so is more transportable. They want a fixed lens for convenience, but a removable lens when they need something special. They want HD uncompressed 4:4:4 in a MiniDV tape for convenience. How many things do we want???

Learn the limitations of your equipement and learn to solve them!!!

Well if i knew that i could have continue to shoot with my old Sony DCR-PC1E ;)

Of course it would be nice to get 1080P with 4:4:4 compression on a miniDV tape. But we wont get it.

But I still want more of a camcorder than just high res.

Some more HD100 footage

Some more HD100 footage

As random as these clips are, they seem alot better than the other clips i've seen so far.

Here's some more footage from the HD100 from across the pond.

I've compared Mark's HD100 footage with similar shots I've done with a Z1. Okay, so the 'fresh-outa-da-box' HD100 is a little on the cool side, maybe a little too much edge, maybe even 'flat' compared to the ultra-zingy colour of Sony's prosumer kit, but...

Watch that focus! (duck clips) That lens is sharp compared to the Z1. Far less edge enhancement (not needed, obviously), and good dynamic range. The Z1's autofocus may be one of the best autofocus mechanisms around, but nothing beats manual, and the Z1 doesn't cut it in that department.

The more I compare his HD100 footage with my z! footage, the more I feel that there's a natural beauty behind the HD100, whereas the Z1 with all its Picture Profiles and fancy BlackStretch amounts to so much lipstick.

It's just all this talk about dead pixels and gain-bugs. I hoped Z1 = PC, HD100 = Mac, but it may be a little sadder. Z1 = Toyota Landcruiser... Anyone here heard of the Landrover Discovery?

If anyone had told me a few years ago we'd be getting this kind of quality and rez from 1/3" chips I'd have thought they were dreaming. And those duck shots ARE sharp. Nice DOF options too. I've gone back and forth from encouraged to disheartened but I'm firmly back on the encouraged side.

I can't wait to experiment with a few filters on this thing.

i dont know how biased of a statement that is.. the DVX has a very unique look that i havn't seen a camera emulate either.. not saying a better or worse look, but a DVX look.

I have to admit, I myself have never been a huge fan of the DVX... used it countless times though. works fine - handles horrible. But nothing special to me. Low end professional camcorder in a prosumer body... The JVC hints a professional camcorder, period.

Lots of tweaking possibilities, more recent technology... c'mon the dvx is fine for a lot of uses, but nothing thrilling (to me... it might be subjective).

More realisticly: the DVX will only be used anymore for the low end pro market and very enthousiastic home-movie-makers. Those's clients won't notice anything special - if there ever was. The JVC is designed with another market in mind - and reading Barry's reviews: you need to be seasoned to use it well....

My own post... I read and wrote DVX and was thinking HVX!

Well maybe im biased because i own a DVX. But the reason i bought the cam was because it could in good hand gives very pleasing images.

As for no HDV giving the same. Well we have only 3 real different HDV cams on the market (with a new Sony comming) And i havent seen anyone of those 3 give the look i want.

Anyone is welcome to proof me wrong. I would be very happy to see DVX-like footage shoot by a HDV cam.

In a good hand the other camcorders can also give you a very pleasing image. But you need a good hand. Just look at those images posted all over the internet, the before and after CC images. Those images proofes that the way to get a "good hand" is long. And what do people mean about a "good hand"? A raw image from the camcorder against an other raw image from an other camcorder without any filters, adapters , cc or so, or the finished image? A "good hand" means to me correct focusing, framing, exposure and camera movement. What does it mean to you? Because even an Arriflex or Panavision can't give you the picture you are dreaming of just to push the "record". It needs "hands" , just one cameraman can't give you the movie.

I've seen a lot of good movies, even from your country, made with interlaced cameras and transfered to film. And I've seen just right now a movie made with a Sony HD... it was just wasting the resolution, it was just bad. Technicaly not the story or acting... technicaly.

What is so good with the HDV and HD is the resolution. If you have resolution than you have better start to film transfer. And what you can see in the cinema is up to those who are working on your movie after you are finished on the set. The colorist has a major roll.

Shortmovies and spots distributed and projected digitalt in Scandinavia as I know.. So you don't have to worried about film transfer you just have to have the resolution and a "good hand".

I guess it is much better if you post a 1 min footage of one of yours movies to challange the HDV world.

Well it dont help so much by comparing footage from two different users. It help more compared footage shot by the same user in the same lightsituation.

The cam is only a part of the problem the user is another. With the DVX i feel like the cam shoots better than im able to use it. With the HDV im still waiting for anybody show some real great footage.

But I dont understand why so many people is hanged up on the resolution. Things like latitude and colors are more important to me than just res.

And as for colorist, my impression is that its harder to colorize something more compressed than DV. And HDV is more compressed than DV.

As for interlaced movies made in my own country. Ive yet to se any movie here that was shot interlaced that looked good. Actually ive only seen one movie here shot digital that I actually liked (picturewise) and that was shoot progressive.

So im not intressed in showing that im make better pictures than the all the HDV user, because i dont. But if you give me both cams im (until someone proof me wrong) im gonna be more pleased with a SD DVX picture than a HD HDV picture.

You didn't have the chance to put DVX and HD100 side by side, you're only based on some footage done by others, with their hand, their situations and their parameters. Try downloading HD100's manual and take a look on it's menus, you can make lots of image adjustments. Get one, adjust it to your preferences and then compare it to the DVX... it's to early to say HDV can't be like or better then DVX picture. Even SD HD100 is propably as good as DVX, i haven't seen DV footage yet. But one thing I'm sure, I can get a "better hand" on a HD100 than on a DVX.
