"First Goldilocks Planet Found"

I saw this article yesterday evening, and one of the guys in the article claims that the odds off life being found on this planet are "100%" - very interesting stuff to think about, but I'm not sure I want the added stress of buying new cute alien pets in the near future :P

They'd better hide their unobtanium.

I'm not sure what to make of that '100%.' Sounds like someone getting a little bit carried away by their own optimism. No competent scientist would seriously offer such a statement based upon such a paucity of data.

Like the Scots expression for 'twilight.'

I learned something new.

Gloaming is a pretty unattractive word, though.

Some bureaucratic dipsh*t will probably name it "Earth 2" just cuz.

I'd rather it be something like "Atlas." Just a cool name. And we could make a modern myth about how Atlas put the earth down and picked up this new one, so it was named after him. :D

This is fun.

'Earth 2' evokes unpleasant memories of that gods-awful tv show that even Clancy Brown and Tim Curry couldn't save.

given the inconceivably immense size of the universe, it is highly likely there are many planets in the habitable zone. but our technology is so primitive it makes finding them difficult. and when we do find them, it will be a long time before space travel develops to where humans can visit them. heck, we've only been to the moon a few times, much less making it to mars. still fun to imagine though.

Well, it's supposed to be a planet with liquid water and areas with temperatures that would work for humans. With 'life' they mean any type of life form, even bacteria.

Leave a glass of water long enough and there will be stuff growing in it. Guess they go with the Jeff Goldblum school of science.

"Life finds a way".

They're not saying it's a 100% chance there's already a McDonald's there.

EDIT:
Just so you guys know, there most likely isn't one.

Great to hear this type of news. Something positive for once.

Also, kinda funny that it ends up being in the Gliese 581 star system. There were the first three Gliese planets that got everyone excited, but then the numbers didn't compute to allow life on those ones.

This planet could have quite a bizarre diversity of life, due to the tidal locking. That is, if it has life in the first place.

I learned something new.

I agree, Earth 2 or Terra Neo or Terra Nova or something like that would be a bit too cliche. Atlas would be a cool name though. I have to admit, Zarmina's World is cool too. I kinda dig it. I think I'm gonna see how I can fit Zarmina's World, and the Gliese 581 system into one of my sci-fi scripts or stories.

As long as they don't name it Klendathu (giant killer alien bugs are no fun).

Maybe there will be some type of national competition to name this planet? That could be fun.

They could name it Gort. And if it has three natural satellites they could be named Klaatu, Berada, and Nicto...

I'm sure he meant to say 99.99% chance. ;)

Either way, where's there's hospitable conditions there's water, and we now know where there's water, there's life. No matter the conditions, life finds a way, even in the cold dark, closed off pockets of frigid water of the Arctic, to the boiling geysers of Yellowstone-

Just look at how many species are here on earth, all because of hospitable conditions and water...

But I'm no scientist...

I wonder if they're already sending radio signals to this place? How many light years away is it?

EDIT: 20 light years seems to be...
