first camera

If I am a young filmaker and I am looking to purchase my first indy camera, which would you recommend?

I am extremely intrigued by the fact that the canon 7d shoots in 24p, has interchangeable lenses and the APS-C, roughly the same as four-perf 35mm and what cinema folk consider full-frame.

The fact that I can buy different lenses and shoot in 24p are great features to give your image the "film look" desired, right?

In addition I am looking to enter festivals and I want a camera that will give me the best "visual quality" (affordable of course) that will keep up with most other movies with a semi pro/pro "film look".

You assistance will be greatly apprecitated.

I am about to purchase the canon 7D until I read your article. Now I have my doubts.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Thank You,

ale

Its a great camera, but for someone who is just starting it might seem daunting. The 7D is by far the best of the bunch but DSLR's still have some short comings, usually for many of us here its worth it because of all the stuff you gain. (interchangeable lenses, small form factor, most people dont think its a video camera so you can get away with shooting at more locations, etc...)

But there are still things like jello, etc...

Research and decide if its best for you. I had been into photography for about 8 or 10 years before getting my D90 that im using now. It was my 2nd DSLR, so i knew a lot of the basic workflow, even then a lot to learn.

The 7D is easier to work with, but still not as easy as a regular camcorder.

If you dont mind the extra care you will need to take, you can get some really amazing results from it.

Dont forget also that being a film maker especially an indy one involves, writing, directing, and editing in addition to the shooting part.

I myself want a 7D now to upgrade from my D90, but it solves a dual need as i need both a great still camera and a video camera.

hope this helps
