first camera to record ProRes in camera

so who's gonna make the first camera to record ProRes in camera? DVCPRO HD & AVC Intra top out at 100mbps, but Jan has mentioned that P2 can handle higher bitrates than that, I think maybe she said 600mbps? anyway, doesn't ProRes HQ top out at 220mbps? am I dreaming?

I'm sure eventually the day will come that cameras will use updateable software codecs. Just install the codec of choice into the camera, set the encoding profile, and off you go...

I guess the camera would need the computer power to do this which might be the problem. I would imagine they are built with particular chips that are specialised at processing the codec in hardware.

Nice idea though.

Wouldn't ProRes only work within FCP? I couldn't imagine a camera manufacturer locking in hardware to only one editing program.

Unless Apple made the camera. Remember iSight? And for a long time that camera held it's value because if it's clarity. Many say the new cameras built into the laptops are not as good.

true, can't see a manufacturing locking into only one program, but maybe as an option?

ie, Panasonic offers choice of DVCPRO HD / AVC-Intra / ProRes / ProRes HQ to P2

just wishful thinking

As long as apple keeps this as an proprietary format for editing i hope NO manufacturer starts implementing support for this in-camera. Unless they allow other to implement and use their codec native i don't se any use for it anyway, especially with AVC-intra. Strangly enough I'm kind of new in the world of codecs but the pain with non standard codecs has already cost my too much of my time when editing.

It would be sweet but if you look at data rates, it would eat up your P2 cards pretty damned quickly. I am betting that AVC Intra is more realistic and will be here in the next low end Pannys according to the rumor mill.

So is it possible for a manufacturer to make a prores camera? I think the workflow would be amazing. I feel as that the camera should be separate from the format. That would enable the owner to use ProRes or Cineform. That would be sweet. Pick your poison.
What would really be nice is a battery operated ProRes Box. Something like Firestore but probably bigger. I think they can pack all of the ProRes chipsets into a dual external 3.5 size casing.

um... not superior enough to DVCPRO HD? 10bit vs 8bit, 145 or 220mb vs 100mb, full raster vs non square pixel? how can you say not superior enough? maybe not superior enough to AVC-Intra you meant?

I would rather like a Cineform (or similar JPEG2000 based) camera.

Would run on all applications.
There is already an external recorder that already does JPEG2000 (can´t remember the name) - similar to a firestore.
But it´s not in my price range in the moment.

There's an external Cineform recorder called the Wafian.

I think Ikegami is bringing out a line of cameras that records to Avid's DNxHD codec (or something like that).

I'm not saying it isn't superior... because it clearly is. My opinion is that it is not superior enough to justify panasonic jumping to it's file size and slicing it's established and advertised record times down. Sure it's better, but as of now, over doubling the information coming out of the camera would be going back to the P2 days of 4 and 8gig cards. It would be nice, but is a dangerous move for a camera company, now that everyone is used to P2 and Express card record times. Perhaps when 64's come out it would not be detrimental.

Perhaps someone could just get the hydro going again?
