First attempt at DVX100b

I have been reading these forums for about 8 months and finally saved enough money to get a DVX100b. It arrived on Tuesday, my friend and I took it out of the box and shot this with it. The only experience I had were with Sony VX2100s. I read the DVX book and watched the DVX DVD and read these forums forever, so I felt comfortable with the camera. I had to use 60i because of the massive amount of slowing and speeding up of footage. This was for Sermonspice.com, and will be shown in our church.

It was edited in Avid Xpress Pro 4.6, Premiere Pro 2.0, and After Effects 6.5 Pro.
No color correction was done and, even though I tried to keep the crisp look of the original, the image was made softer during compression.

Let me know what you think. I am always ready to learn more stuff. This weekend will be the second time we use the camera and we are shooting for Hero Fest! Woohoo!

I really liked the idea. You could have used some color correction and perhaps another scene with the same idea. It seemed a tad bit long to hold that shot for. Good job though.

I'm sure he made two clips and sped one way up and one way down and then cropped one so it only took up half the screen and placed it on top of the other ... or that's how I would do it at least.

Looks good, cool effect, very clever - just cuz I can guess how you did it doesn't mean I'd ever have thought of doing it, but compression is not so hot. I would be interested in seeing a higher resolution file to look at the motion.

You can hit us with 20 - 40 mb or more and we won't blink. I'll host it if your bandwidth is sparse.

First of all, thanks for your feedback! I did a version of split screen for the effect. I shot for an hour then used this footage for the cars, and then recorded the people running and walking....I am the runner. :-) Then I split the picture up the right side of the grass, over the tree, around and then around the person. This was a moving mask in After effects so, as the person moved, the mask shifted so the fast video could be seen on the left as well. The footage was all 60i. I slowed the slow motion down 50% to create full frames in a 29.97 timeline. The fast motion was 1 hour of footage compressed to three minutes of footage.

it looks great, even better the first time I watched it when I did not notice the difference in the left and right side of the tree shaddow.

Is there any evidence of the split when viewing it on a large monitor?

Wow

Wow

Wow...powerful message. I do media at my church and have purchased several clips with relevant messages from the web site you mentioned. This clip is excellent and I would purchase it.

You also have nice work on your web site.

Thanks!

Very cool. could have been better , but very cool either way.
I like the verse, (did you know that that verse is refering to 2 groups of supposed "believers" ratner than one group of believers and one non belieiving.) sheep and wolves in sheeps clothng.

I didn't quite get the connection between the message and the shots, maybe the road is the wide gate? and the sidewalk is the narrow? just guessing.
I love the fact that your piece had an actual purpose and message, .
do some more. cant wait to see em

You got it. :-)

In answer to the other questions,
In the large image, there is almost no evidence of split. The only evidence is a slight lightning of the left farthest building as I run by. It is seamless other than that. Thank you for the comments! I am filming for herofest this weekend!

I love the time effect, I read how you did it but is it possible to do the same thing in Final Cut Pro 4.0? Thanks for your time.

very easy to do in FCP. just use the 8 pt. garbage matte and keyframe it to follow your subject. make sure to soften the edges. even when both shots are from the same angle, the light and shadows will change somewhat and the feathered edges help cover it up.

yes ... in any NLE that will let you crop and change speed.

IN FCP 4.5 and up (never used below but might be the same)
copy the clip and put it over itsefl in the time line
then click on the top clip
in the viewer window select the motion tab
then open the crop controls and crop left or right

Or ...
copy the clip and put it over itsefl in the time line
then select the top clip
in your tool bar select the crop tool
then turn on view image and wireframe in either the viewer or the canvas (third pulldown menu in either the viewer or canvas actual window)
you will see the shape of the clip outlined in light blue
using the crop tool on your curser, drag the edge in as you want to crop it

and of course change the speed for the top and bottom clip somewhere in the process
