First 7D/5DII Infomercial?

I agree the food shots look awesome, glad those worked out so well John.

mcgeedigital: The cost of a Master Zoom pretty much ends with the rental cost of the lens the time needed to set up the rig. On the day we save time by not changing lenses and not remarking the lenses for the wireless follow focus.

Buying ND6 gel requires at least 2-3 grips/electrics/PAs cutting perfectly measured rectangles and then applying them to the windows. That is incredibly time consuming and if the light shifts too much we would have to put them up and down. In addition ND gels that are not 100% perfectly applied to the window create very distracting reflections, in my experience.

Given the crew size and the incredibly tight amount of time we had to get through the all of the material, ND'n windows was not an option.

Also I had a 1.2k coming through the window to light up the back table. That would have interfered with that quite a bit. Honestly having curtains that were more opaque would have been a great option, not to pass the buck on the art department

I agree that a quick secondary or even a basic primary/highlights on some of the shots would help a little.

Cheers,

Matt

Understood, every shoot has its compromises.

It looked incredible, as far as I am concerned, as does all of your work, Matt.

Kudos.

Agreed.

If you had enough $$$ to rent an Arri Master Zoom, you had enough to buy a roll or 2 of .6ND

mcgeedigital: Yes, the windows are distracting. Mr. Workman's right--time was tight, ND's on the windows probably wouldn't have been practical.

Lammy: Agreed, a secondary CC session is definitely in order (Wanna help, Matt?) Which dishes look particularly "radioactive" to you?

Mainly the yellow stuff: peppers at 00:16, and the bright egg custard at 00:18. It's very bright on my monitor (although my colour profile is set to Adobe RGB, gamma 2.2)

The burgers at 00:57 could do with darker browns. The bread bap looks richer than the meat - which looks like a pale pink (an artefact from using an extraflat picture curve?)

I love the grading everywhere else though!

Here's an updated version with better skin tones and food that doesn't look radioactive:

We also lowered the price :)

Friend and co-DP Eric Westpheling did the corrections (www.ericwestpheling.com)

Unfortunately, the windows are cooked in some of the shots. That's what we get for using a practical location with constantly changing natural light; we didn't have time to futz around with window gelling after Cathy arrived. Definitely shooting RED on the next one.
