First 2 camera GH1 gig

Looks great.... what lenses did you use? Also what did you use to keep the handheld stuff stable?

20mm 1.7
Asahi Pentax 50mm 1.4
Kit Lens

all mixed throughout.

20mm 1.7 hunts too much for wider/ group shots and really had a watery effect unfortunately so I'll have to get used to locking down the focus in manual mode or use the lock button, wasn't expecting that :(

Asahi 50mm 1.4 is a $45 dollar lens off ebay usually - it's great but flares really bad so I have to invest in a good haze filter to minimize that. It's prone to lots of jitters handheld so I had to use a lot of stabilization filters mainly for the ceremony, which sadly, shows, but not too bad.

Kit Lens was of some use, but of course, was too dark for a lot of reception use and is like using an HDV camera like an XH a1 in terms of low light sensitivity.

I did use a manfrotto modosteady a bit, but don't much care for it now.

Great editing and storytelling. Visually beautiful - But what gets me the most is the constant shaking from being handheld. Where you using a monopod or shoulder brace at all for this shoot? I'm guessing that the prime lenses don't use image stabilization. I'm wanting to go with the GH1 so bad but this issue is something that I'm going to have to address right away. I can't even stand my own shaky handheld footage from my DVX which is a much larger/easier cam to handle.

I like the footage from the modosteady, you definitely pulled it off. Smooth floating traveling shots. Probably not the easiest piece of gear to work with, which appears to be more useful for small camcorders. But damn the footage looks great.

The bridesmaids walking down the aisle in the first chapter was slo-mo. What film rate did you use? Did you shoot at 60p for the intent of slowing it down or was it tried differently in post? Also what lens was used for this - it had a nice warm glow to it, but the cutaways where a little washed out.

Again I love the pacing, timeshifting and clean audio/music bed of this edit. I just finished an edit and let my wife watch it and she was less than impressed. She likes the cinematic slomo highlight pieces that I use to edit. I'm now trying to get up speed with what you're editing/shooting style is like. I wish I had some great useful thought speeches to narrate my edit to, not the mumbling nervous hacks that I manage to tape. Later I'll watch the rest of the chapters for more inspiration - but for now I got to get rolling on my next edit. Thanks.

I agree with good editing and storytelling. Only thing that got me was the yellow tones. The skin tones were yellow. Keep up the great work though.

Ahoy, thanks

I shot the whole thing in 720 60P and put it into a 30 p timeline as sometimes I needed to go down to 1/30 of a second for low light, which in a sense, turns 60 fps footage into 30 fps of course. But the shots bright enough for 1/60th or higher shutter I selected from for slo mo work. Processionals are a good place to use slo mo since they're moving targets and you may not be able to keep rack focusing on them handheld with a 50mm manual lens, which of course, has no OIS.

Modosteady was bleh. Didn't really work and will be eventually getting a Hague Mini Motion cam as I've seen GH1 footage with it that actually is steadicam like.

Hoping to do most wedding edits like this from now on. The Groom I know from college, so he was open/trusting to a different type of edit vs. the standard fare.

Hey Gary,

Great work and good to see you over here. You might have just convinced me to get a GH1 as the wedding video I've seen shot with this camera up until this point hasn't been in the most capable hands. The small amount of preceremony I've seen shows that while it's not a 5D, the Panny is no slouch in the image department. It's certainly an upgrade from any HDV camera out there for under $5K.

Thanks for sharing and hope you're doing well!

Hey Chris longtime.

Keep in mind this is also internet and 720P not 1080P in person on a tv. And a few of those shots are from the kit lens.

But yeah it's certainly a capable camear, I had no clue how little event videographers use a GH1 lumix. You just need to find the right lenses and you have yourself a setup.

Having used both, the Mark ii is the best in low light, no question as it can deliver a pristine image in lower light, but

honestly...

The Lumix is just SOOOOOOOOO much easier to shoot with and less stress IMO.

Nothing beats putting everything you need in a backpack and going home without any soreness.

I still have to work out a few kinks. I was going to write a blog article about the two but not sure my site would get enough hits....maybe if I have time.

I'm really excited as with four thirds format, you can make f2 (not 2.8) zoom lenses. Olympus already has some, hopefully panasonic follows suit with OIS zooms. I want to rent/try the Zuiko f2 14-35mm which would be a great walkaround lens but retails for $1700 :(

Hey Psynema - Finished watching the other segments of your wedding film and enjoyed it. Loved the use of the speeches thru out the edit. (Again wish I had good speeches to work with) How did you capture the speeches? It seems like you have a light stand in front of the DJ's speaker with an audio recorder mounted to it. If so can you go into detail about that - (placement, levels, monitoring....)

I have a Zoom H2 that I've used in the past with varying results. Sometimes the DJ can patch out with RCA, others can't. Decent results with this method but can't always get good levels without constantly checking the H2. Other time just hiding the H2 somewhere in the reception hall often with not so good results.

Have you shot any recent events with the 2 cam GH1 setup? What would you change about shooting the next event? Are you adding more gear/lenses?

Sorry for all the questions - Just looking to be inspired for the upcoming wedding season both shooting and editing.

Thanks in advance - Mike

Hey thanks

I used a Zoom H4n and just hooked a wireless mic output from the H4n and carried the receiver with me to monitor levels. I just set the sensitivity in front of the speaker accordingly.

Lenses I could use more of...1.7 20mm was good, but do want something faster, and I'm hoping to add the 35mm nokton 1.2 and get a Vivitar 85mm 1.4 hopefully as well to complete a lens kit. The 20mm was a bit too wide for reception work and the 50mm lens I had isn't good for hanheld since you get jitters (no is, it's a manual 50mm) and putting it on a tripod is ok, but wish it could be longer, so I'm hoping to get an 85mm for tripod long shots in low light).

But aside from that you can film a wedding it seems with just a 20mm and 50mm if they're fast enough. Didn't use the kit lens much, just a few shots at the reception and bridal prep.

Man, i really wanna see this, but i use an at&t aircard on my desktop (i'm in a rural area, no highspeed connection)...i'll have to wait til i have full signal...i am very interested in seeing what your lenses delivered because i'm now in the market to start buying some. Your descriptions of lens performance here sofar has been very informative, but i want to see the video...hopefully i'll be able tro see it in a little while....
